United Party no match for NPP or NDC – Paul Adom-Otchere

0

Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has cast doubt on the political viability of the newly launched United Party (UP Plus), suggesting that the party lacks the strength to pose a serious challenge to Ghana’s two dominant political forces—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday October 18, Adom-Otchere argued that despite its ambitions, UP Plus does not have the organisational capacity, mass appeal, or political infrastructure to disrupt what he described as a deeply entrenched political duopoly.

“This UP is not going to be able to raise substantial anything to confront the NDC or the NPP. The NDC is a huge political party. The NPP is a behemoth—you can’t do much about it,” he stated.

He went on to emphasise that the average Ghanaian voter already sees the NPP and NDC as the two primary political alternatives, limiting the room for newer entrants like UP Plus to gain national traction.

“You can’t deal with a behemoth like that and assume that you are offering an alternative. The alternative they are offering is already in the market. The Ghanaian is seeing the alternative to the NPP as the NDC, and it is a formidable alternative. The Ghanaian sees the alternative of the NDC as the NPP, and it is a formidable alternative,” he said.

His remarks come in the wake of growing media attention on UP Plus, a newly registered political party led by former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen. The party, which emerged from the Movement for Change, has positioned itself as a centrist force focused on economic recovery, institutional reform, and anti-duopoly governance.

Despite skepticism from political analysts like Adom-Otchere, UP Plus maintains that it is not simply another “third force,” but a serious political movement aimed at reshaping Ghana’s political landscape.

“This is not Alan Kyerematen’s United Party or some personal third force… This is what will shock the duopoly,” said Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Interim General Secretary of UP Plus, during an appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV.

Asamoa argued that the party’s focus on Ghana’s economic crisis and its vision of inclusive governance distinguishes it from previous short-lived political alternatives.

Director of Communications for the party, Solomon Owusu, earlier on the Channel One Newsroom also asserted that UP Plus brings together “the best minds” from across Ghana’s civil and political society, describing it as a transformational platform, not just an electoral vehicle.

UP Plus officially received its registration from the Electoral Commission on October 3, 2025, and has since declared its intention to contest the 2028 general elections.

President Mahama’s China diplomacy powers Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and green transformation

0

Ghana’s economic transformation has entered a decisive phase under President John Dramani Mahama. His recent engagements in China have deepened Ghana’s strategic partnerships, secured significant investments, and reaffirmed the nation’s readiness to embrace an inclusive and sustainable 24-hour economy. With clear policy direction, strong diplomatic ties, and dedicated leadership, Ghana is positioning itself as West Africa’s next great centre of industrial growth and innovation.

A vision rooted in purpose

President Mahama’s diplomacy has always been purposeful, grounded in a belief that international partnerships must deliver practical benefits at home. His official visit to Beijing, where he met President Xi Jinping, epitomised that approach, turning goodwill into tangible outcomes.

The discussions produced a series of landmark agreements focused on sustainability, infrastructure, and trade. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting green transitions, tackling illegal mining, and expanding renewable energy investments.

“Diplomacy must deliver real dividends for our people. Every engagement must bring Ghana closer to industrial strength, sustainability, and shared prosperity,” President John Dramani Mahama stated.

Strategic gains for national development

The outcomes of the Beijing visit have been both immediate and substantial. China has granted Ghana 400 million RMB in development support this year alone, including 200 million RMB already allocated for a new modern market in Aflao in the Volta Region. Another 200 million RMB will finance new projects selected by the Mahama administration.

Perhaps most significant is the decision to finalise a zero per cent tariff agreement by 28 October 2025, which will make Ghana only the second African country to enjoy such preferential access to China’s vast market. This milestone, combined with Ghana–China trade volumes exceeding 11.8 billion US dollars, promises a new era of enhanced exports and investment flows.

The big push and 24h+: driving Ghana’s economic engine

Central to President Mahama’s development agenda are two flagship programmes. The first is the National Infrastructure Development Programme, popularly known as “The Big Push”, a multi-billion-dollar initiative targeting the modernisation of roads, railways, water systems, and industrial infrastructure across the country.

The second, the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+), is designed to ensure that Ghana’s economy operates efficiently around the clock, boosting production, exports, and employment. Together, these programmes form the cornerstone of a new industrial renaissance, connecting opportunity with productivity.

President Mahama’s recent diplomatic gains with China directly support these programmes – ensuring that infrastructure development and continuous economic activity move hand in hand.

The green city: a model for sustainable growth

Among the initiatives championed by President Mahama is the Green City Project, a transformative plan to create an eco-friendly, high-tech metropolis spanning the Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern Regions. The Green City will integrate renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and sustainable architecture, setting new standards for urban living in Africa.

An inter-ministerial committee and a transaction advisor have already been appointed to guide its development. The project will not only reduce Ghana’s carbon footprint but also generate thousands of jobs in construction, energy, and technology.

“This city will embody the future we are building – clean, digital, and inclusive,” President Mahama noted.

“It is a symbol of what Ghana stands for: progress with responsibility.”

Promoting investment through professional leadership

The drive to attract global investors is being expertly led by Simon Madjie, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).

A lawyer and a seasoned investment promotion professional, Madjie has been instrumental in positioning Ghana as one of Africa’s most competitive and investor-friendly economies.

At the Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, Madjie invited Chinese firms to explore opportunities in electric vehicle production, renewable energy, and value-added manufacturing.

He underscored Ghana’s strategic advantages from its skilled workforce and renewable energy potential to its rich deposits of lithium, bauxite, and manganese.

“Our message to investors is clear,” Madjie said. “Ghana is open for business, ready for innovation, and committed to protecting your investment through sound policies and strong institutions.”

Madjie also highlighted the potential of Ghana’s industrial zones, including the Dawa Industrial Zone and Appolonia City, as ideal locations for electric vehicle assembly and high-value manufacturing.

The 24-hour economy in motion

The 24-hour economy concept is not a distant aspiration; it is already taking shape. By encouraging industries, logistics, health, digital services, and manufacturing sectors to operate efficiently beyond traditional working hours, the policy is designed to expand employment, strengthen exports, and keep the economy active at all times.

Through the 24H+ framework, Ghana is developing the human capital and infrastructure necessary to sustain round-the-clock productivity. It is a model that supports both large-scale enterprises and small businesses, ensuring that no capable Ghanaian is left without opportunity.

Ghana’s confident march into the future

President Mahama’s engagements in China reflect a leader who understands that effective diplomacy must align with national priorities. His focus on the 24H+, The Big Push, and the Green City demonstrates a coherent, long-term vision for Ghana’s transformation.

Under his leadership, Ghana is regaining momentum, creating jobs, deepening international partnerships, and building infrastructure that will serve generations. With professionals like Simon Madjie(Esq.) advancing Ghana’s investment agenda, the nation stands ready to seize the opportunities of the modern global economy.

President Mahama’s diplomacy has become more than statecraft; it has become a catalyst for sustainable progress. Ghana is not waiting for the future – it is building it, 24 hours a day.

The remarkable story of Gyearbuor Asante who starred in the famous ‘Mind Your Language’

0

Ghanaian-British actor, Frederick Christopher Kwabena Gyearbuor Asante Erskine Ghanaian-British actor, Frederick Christopher Kwabena Gyearbuor Asante Erskine

Frederick Christopher Kwabena Gyearbuor Asante Erskine could have been a chief.

Hailing from a long line of royalty in Kwahu Tafo, the path to chieftaincy was his for the taking.

However, he chose a different stage, captivating audiences across Britain and Ghana with his commanding presence and comedy prowess, leaving behind a legacy as one of television’s most beloved characters.

A surprising choice

Born in Accra on November 4, 1941, Asante was destined for the stool. However, his passion lay in performance. At age 26, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1967 and formally trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

The chieftaincy he declined was later taken up by his friend, the television producer, Humphrey Barclay.

Asante became a familiar face on British television under the name Christopher Asante. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he appeared in popular series such as Space: 1999, Hazell, and The Professionals.

A role that established his name in the limelight was when he appeared in the hit British sitcom, ‘Mind Your Language’, where he showcased his comedic skills.

He played Roger Kenyon, a sharp-witted inspector for the local education authority, whom the flustered Mr Brown mistakes for a new African student from Kenya and treats him like a student.

The memorable episode ended with the impressed inspector praising Brown’s teaching methods.

His film work included a role as the minister in the beloved 1983 Bill Forsyth film, Local Hero.

In 1989, Asante landed the role that would define his career. In the popular TV series ‘Desmond’s’, set in a barbershop in Peckham, his character, Matthew, a wise and calm Gambian student who served as a moral compass, often provided the solution to the episode’s chaos.

The character broke stereotypes and made Asante an icon of representation and warmth.

A Befitting End

In 1995, Asante returned to his roots in Ghana, where his contributions to the arts were officially recognised with an appointment as a cultural ambassador.

Asante passed away on August 2, 2000, at the age of 58 in Accra, and his funeral was held in his ancestral village of Tafo Kwahu, bringing his remarkable journey to a close in the very community from which his royal lineage sprang.

In a full-circle moment, the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, where he got his first acting education, established the “Gyearbuor Asante Prize for Acting” in his honour.

Though his life was cut short, Frederick Christopher Kwabena Gyearbuor Asante Erskine’s legacy is enduring.

From a potential chief in Ghana to a cherished actor in the UK, he used his talent to bridge cultures and bring laughter, ensuring his memory remains as warm and lasting as his most famous performance.

Where is Pearl Acquaye, the girl who presented a flower bouquet to Queen Elizabeth II in 1961?

0

Pearl Acquaye presented flowers to late Queen Elizabeth before her trip to Ghana in 1961 Pearl Acquaye presented flowers to late Queen Elizabeth before her trip to Ghana in 1961

Pearl Acquaye, then a six-year-old Ghanaian living in London, had the honor and rare opportunity to be captured in what has now become a historic moment, an image that lives on as a significant archival piece in the history books of both Ghana and the United Kingdom.

Pearl, the daughter of a member of the Ghanaian community, presented a bouquet of flowers to the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1961 at the London Airport, shortly before the Queen and her husband departed for their visit to Ghana.

The queen’s visit to Ghana was part of the first stage of her West African tour, which also included stops in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia.

Pearl was captured beaming with smiles, while the queen, clearly pleased by the gesture, returned the smile warmly.

According to the Illustrated London News, which prominently featured the photo, the Queen’s West African tour was officially announced by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons on November 8, 1961.

That photo, which is now 64 years old, stands as a powerful reminder of a poignant moment in history.

With time having passed, Pearl, once a little girl who stood before royalty, unknowingly stepped into the pages of history.

But recent searches on her online have not led to any meaningful results, and one may just be wondering, where is this little princess whose image has become a beautiful moment in Ghana’s history?

IMF applauds Ghana’s recent cedi appreciation

0

The IMF has praised Ghana's economic recovery The IMF has praised Ghana’s economic recovery

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lauded Ghana on the recent stabilisation of the cedi, noting that the development signals improvements in the country’s economic fundamentals, renewed policy credibility, and investor confidence.

Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director, African Department, IMF, said this at the October 2025 Regional Economic Outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa in Washington, D.C, during the IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings.

“A couple of years ago, all the concern in Ghana was about uncontrolled depreciation. It’s generally good to see stabilisation returning to the economy… allowing the cedi to stabilise and maybe even begin to appreciate,” he said.

Selassie underscored that “all such things are good for competitiveness; the direction of travel that is the right one and the appreciation reflective of some fundamentals, but we don’t want that to get too frothy.”

He, however, cautioned that excessive appreciation of the exchange rate could have a negative bearing on the cedi and the economy at large, urging the Central Bank to reduce its interference.

The IMF African Department Director explained that Ghana’s relatively shallow capital, foreign exchange and money markets exposed it to volatility, which could be disruptive to the economy, calling for a balanced approach to handling the forex market.

“It’s about striking the right balance. Too much interference can cause problems when you have a lot of flaws and you’re trying to identify and calibrate policies to minimise those flaws,” he stated.

In the first quarter of 2025, the Bank of Ghana injected US$1.4 billion into the currency markets, with additional US$2bn in the second quarter, helping boost the appreciation of the cedi and shore up the country’s external buffers.

Meanwhile, Dr Johnson Asiama Pandit, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, in an earlier engagement on a different platform at the meetings, noted the Bank’s interventions were to prevent a total market collapse, saying, “We do not over-support the markets at all.”

“All we seek to do is to limit the volatilities in the markets, to ensure that we have that smooth dynamics in the market. And that’s the framework we will maintain going forward,” he emphasised.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, during a media engagement in September, in Accra, noted that the Central Bank intervened in the foreign exchange market to correct some imbalances warranted by the appreciation of the cedi.

“The Bank of Ghana has been intervening in the forex market, but they’ve withdrawn,” he said, explaining that it was because of the exponential increase in imports, occasioned by the rapid appreciation in the value of the cedi.

The situation, he said, was not favourable to exporters, hence the need to adjust and balance developments in the market to ensure that exporters were able to do good business and importers also not overburdened by high forex.

We aim to be a credible alternative – UP Plus

0

The newly launched United Party (UP Plus) says it is positioning itself as a credible alternative to Ghana’s long-standing political duopoly, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Interim General Secretary of the party, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has stated that public disenchantment with both major parties has created a clear opening for a new political force — one that UP Plus is determined to fill.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday October 18, Asamoa pointed to voter apathy and internal dissatisfaction within the two major parties as evidence of a growing appetite for political change.

“It is obvious that there is a space for a third force. The duopoly is not safe anymore. It is a fact. Two million people refused to step out and vote in the last election,” he said.

According to him, many of these voters were not just disengaged but made a conscious decision to sit out the polls because of frustration with their parties or a lack of confidence in the choices available to them.

“These were people who risked going into opposition because they were unhappy with either the leadership of their party or the goings on for that election,” he explained.

Asamoa maintained that while the public is ready for something new, the challenge lies in whether any group can convincingly present itself as a capable alternative to either — or both — of the dominant parties.

“It is a fact that there is appetite for a third force. The real question is whether or not there is a credible alternative which can step into either the breach for one of the duopoly or for both. That is what we aim to be — a credible alternative,” he said.

UP Plus, formerly known as the Movement for Change, is led by former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen. The party received official registration from the Electoral Commission on October 3, 2025, and has since unveiled a centrist agenda focused on economic transformation, political inclusion, and institutional reform.

TOUGHA strengthens East African partnerships, champions intra-African travel

TOUGHA President, Yvonne Donkor (L) and Dominic Louis, Head of Sales, Air Tanzania Company (R) TOUGHA President, Yvonne Donkor (L) and Dominic Louis, Head of Sales, Air Tanzania Company (R)

The President of the Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA), Yvonne Donkor, is leading renewed efforts to strengthen partnerships between Ghana and East African countries as part of a broader agenda to boost intra-African tourism and travel.

Earlier this month, Donkor embarked on a working tour of Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, where she engaged key tourism and government stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and connectivity across the continent.

Her first stop was in Kenya, where she attended this year’s Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) — one of East Africa’s largest tourism trade events that brings together international buyers, sellers and destination marketers. Following the event, she continued to Tanzania and Zanzibar to further deepen ties and create platforms for cross-border tourism exchange.

While in Zanzibar, Donkor held high-level discussions with the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Dr Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, the Lord Mayor of Zanzibar City Council, Mahmoud M Mussa and Dr Abdulla Mohammed Juma, Director, Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Department of Tourism. The talks focused on cultural tourism, heritage promotion and sustainable destination development between Ghana and Zanzibar.

Significantly, the discussions also explored the possibility of TOUGHA participating in next year’s Z-Summit Zanzibar, an annual global tourism event that convenes leading industry stakeholders, investors, and innovators to network, share insights, and shape the future of tourism. TOUGHA’s participation, Donkor noted, would help position Ghanaian tour operators and destinations more prominently on the African and international tourism stage.

In Tanzania, Donkor also met with executives of Air Tanzania, which is set to commence direct flights between Tanzania and Ghana in the coming days—a development expected to strengthen connectivity and encourage both tourism and business travel between West and East Africa.

Back in Accra, during TOUGHA’s monthly general meeting, officials from Air Tanzania made a formal presentation to TOUGHA members on the airline’s imminent flight operations to Ghana.

Speaking at the engagements, Donkor expressed her optimism about the new partnership and the growing momentum for intra-African tourism.

“For far too long, Africans have had to travel through Europe or the Middle East to reach fellow African destinations,” Donkor said. “With Air Tanzania’s direct flights to Ghana, we are breaking down barriers and making it easier for Africans to connect, explore and do business with one another. This is a milestone for African tourism integration.”

She added that TOUGHA remains committed to building bridges across the continent in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions an integrated and prosperous Africa driven by its own people.

“Our vision is to make Africa the first choice for Africans. Through partnerships like these, we can create seamless travel experiences, strengthen cultural ties, and unlock the vast tourism potential that exists across our regions,” she emphasised.

Gold, poison and kidney: A true story Ghana must hear

0

This piece isn’t intended to blame any government or political party. It is intended to help increase awareness of kidney damage risks which keep increasing in Ghana.

I learnt of this risk in about 1990 in Obuasi when Anglogold (Ashanti Goldfields) installed its globally acclaimed innovative sulphur treatment plant (the STP – BIOX) which uses bacteria to remove sulphur compounds (pollutants) from water as part of its gold recovery process.

My cousin was the Mechanical Engineer in charge of running the plant. I was then a BSc Mathematics undergrad at KNUST. When he took me on a visit to the plant, he told me of the risks of excessive poisons which the mining industry is unleashing into our environment and warned that Ghana shouldn’t allow individuals to do mining because they cannot safely handle these deadly pollutants in the same way Ashanti Goldfields was doing by investing in the expensive sulphur treatment plant.

Directly, he mentioned kidney damage risks associated with the chemicals used in recovering gold. – the compounds of cyanides, mercury, arsenic, etc. Being a science student then, I understood and appreciated the explanations he gave me. So over the past 35 years, I have keenly observed the kidney damage risks unfold. For example, availability of dialysis machines in our hospitals hasn’t been a mainstream news until recent times.

Unfortunately, my cousin himself, then a Mechanical Engineer and who later became Contracts Manager for Anglogold Ashanti after studying law, died of kidney failure and I have had a reduced kidney function from my last test. His words to me when he discovered he had kidney damage was “Taywee, I’ve been hit”. Yes, he calls me Taywee, short form for Tawiah. After saying to me he has been hit, my question to him was “Hit by what?”. He said “I have been hit by kidney damage and you know I’ve been talking about this risk for a long time•.

This conversation took place in his office in Accra. He was then the Executive Secretary for Ghana Institution of Engineers. Since then, I have been interested and observing kidney related news and it keeps becoming alarming. At this stage, the question will remain “who will act to save the people of Ghana from the increasing risks of kidney diseases?”

Amongst friends, I have told this kidney disease risks story for 35 years ever since my cousin educated me about it but I think the time is right to tell it publicly to increase awareness. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.

CJ’s seat not a fixed traditional stool occupants can claim as a right – Ansa-Asare to Torkornoo

0

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has criticised former Chief Justice (CJ) Gertrude Torkornoo’s latest legal action challenging her removal from office, stating that the position of CJ is not a personal entitlement or a traditional stool one can claim as an infinite right.

Speaking in reaction to the latest legal action seeking to halt the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as her successor, Mr Ansa-Asare said Torkornoo’s conduct shows “emotional imbalance and immaturity.”

He explained that the former CJ’s challenge holds no legal weight under Ghana’s Constitution.

“She must realise that the seat of the Chief Justice is not a fixed traditional stool that the occupant can claim as a right,” Mr. Ansa-Asare said.

“Once the Pwamang Committee has submitted its report and the president has accepted the report and the recommendations contained in it, they cease to be primary findings; they now become the decision of the president, and the decision of the president was taken in accordance with the constitution.”

He explained that Article 146 (1–11) of the 1992 Constitution gives no individual the right to question the President’s acceptance of the recommendations of a committee investigating a judge’s removal.

“A former Chief Justice must understand that she is bound by the Constitution. If she does not appreciate the CJ removal process, if she cannot respect it, then she’s only demonstrating that when she was appointed, she was immature.

“She must know that, in law, she cannot resurrect the case. The president has acted within the confines of the Constitution,” he stated.

Mr Ansa-Asare further argued that Madam Torkornoo’s attempt to stop the President from nominating a new Chief Justice amounts to obstructing a constitutional duty.

“The nomination of the CJ is not a presidential privilege; it’s a constitutional duty that must be performed. ..Therefore, her latest action is flawed, and it will not go anywhere,” he said.

The former CJ’s application at the High Court seeks to quash all proceedings of the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee established under Article 146 to consider petitions for her removal.

The former CJ is also asking the court to set aside all proceedings conducted by the Committee tasked with investigating petitions for her removal.

She is also requesting that the presidential warrant that removed her from office be declared unlawful, null, void, and of no effect.

The development comes as the Appointments Committee of Parliament prepares to vet Justice Baffoe-Bonnie.

‘Torkonoo is becoming a cry baby’ – Amaliba

0

Former Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has criticised former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, saying she is becoming a ‘crybaby’ for what he describes as attempts to delay ongoing legal and administrative processes concerning her removal from office.

Speaking on Prime Insight on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Mr. Amaliba said the former Chief Justice’s repeated legal actions were merely tactics to stall proceedings.

“Torkonoo is becoming a cry baby. A cry baby because at each step along the way, she decides to file processes, and both processes are meant just to stall the legal process that was ongoing. Now the committee has finished its work. For me, this matter is closed,” he stated.

His comments come after Justice Torkonoo filed a new legal action seeking to stop the vetting and subsequent appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.

Her application at the High Court also seeks to quash all proceedings of the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee, which was established under Article 146 of the Constitution to consider petitions for her removal.

Mr. Amaliba, reacting to claims by counsel for former President Akufo-Addo, Ekow Abaka Essuman, that the Attorney General (AG) had not filed a statement of case in the matter, dismissed the criticism.

“The AG can always go to court and ask for time to file his processes. It’s been done several times. If the AG is bogged down with other very important matters, he’s not supposed to break a leg or an arm. He can always go to court, ask for leave, and then file the processes,” Mr. Amaliba explained.

When asked whether the government was taking the matter seriously, the NDC legal practitioner insisted that the law allows flexibility.

“I’m saying that once the law allows the AG to appear in court and say, ‘Can you give me three days or seven days to file my processes?’ there’s nothing wrong. The AG will do it at the right time,” he added.

Minister calls for renewal of Volta Lake Safety Project

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has commended Ecozoil Limited for its dedicated efforts to improve safety and protect lives on the Volta Lake.

The praise came when a delegation from the company, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, donated 200 life jackets to schoolchildren and residents in the Krachi West District on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The initiative, led by the National Coordinator of the Volta Lake Transport Safety Project, Yaa Ofriwaa, and Business Development Manager, Daniel Lamptey, was a direct response to the recent boat disaster that claimed several lives.

Gyapong applauded the Jospong Group and Ecozoil for their consistent commitment to community safety, calling them a model of corporate citizenship.

“Ecozoil has demonstrated what it means to be a responsible partner in national development,” he stated.

“Their response after the recent tragedy shows compassion, leadership, and a genuine commitment to saving lives. I am ready to support them wherever necessary to ensure this initiative continues,” he added.

The minister also pledged his full support for the renewal of the Volta Lake Transport Safety Project (VLTSP), highlighting its crucial past role in safety education and enforcement.

“This project made a difference. It improved safety awareness and helped reduce accidents. I strongly support its renewal and will work with the relevant ministries and agencies to make that possible,” he assured.

With the Volta Lake covering over 22 per cent of the region, Hon. Gyapong stressed the need for a well-regulated water transport system to drive growth.

“Transport on the lake must be as safe and organised as transport on land,” he emphasised.

“We must empower local communities, enforce safety regulations, and make sure every passenger has access to life-saving tools,” he indicated.

He concluded by acknowledging the essential role of the private sector, stating, “Government alone cannot do it all. We need committed private sector partners like the Jospong Group and Ecozoil to help us achieve lasting safety and sustainable development for our people.”

NPP not concerned about Alan’s United Party — Ahiagbah

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has no concerns over the emergence of the newly launched United Party (UP Plus), describing it as a non-issue in the context of Ghana’s evolving political landscape.

Reacting to recent commentary about the potential threat posed by UP Plus on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday October 18, NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah said there is no reason for the NPP to be alarmed by the formation of the centrist political group led by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen.

“I don’t think there is anything for the NPP to be worried about,” Ahiagbah said. “The UP Party is not what they have formed. They say they have formed a centrist party — the values that define the UP tradition are not what they are claiming, so technically it is just a name.”

Ahiagbah emphasised that the NPP has not held any formal meetings to discuss or react to the UP Plus launch.

“In fact, the NPP hasn’t sat to arrive at a decision to say we are calling them or chasing them here and there. If anybody said that, it is their personal opinion,” he added.

His remarks come after UP Plus General Secretary Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former NPP Member of Parliament, made a bold case for the new party, stating that it is “not just another third force” but a centrist platform positioned to challenge the political dominance of both the NPP and NDC.

According to Asamoa, UP Plus is focused on solving Ghana’s deepening economic crisis and pushing for institutional reforms that can restore public trust in governance.

“This is not Alan Kyerematen’s personal party. This is a movement galvanising public opinion around economic recovery,” he said in an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV.

UP Plus, which officially received its Electoral Commission registration on October 3, 2025, is a rebranded continuation of Kyerematen’s earlier political movement, the Movement for Change.

The party’s leadership includes former government officials and professionals from across the political spectrum who argue that Ghana needs a new, inclusive direction.

Mahama’s failure to give reasons for Torkonoo’s removal undermines process – Martin Kpebu

0

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has expressed mixed feelings about the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, stating that while he agrees with the grounds for her removal, President John Dramani Mahama’s failure to give reasons for the decision weakens the credibility of the process.

“The fact that the removal is correct does not mean everything is correct.

The late Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II The late Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II

An old video of the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, arbitrating a case at the Manhyia Palace in the 1980s has resurfaced online.

In the video, the late king is seen seated on his stool at the Manhyia Palace during a durbar, surrounded by his kinsmen, as he addressed a case involving a dispute over the selection of a chief by a group of people.

Details of Otumfuo gifting two iconic kente fabrics to Parliament House emerges

In the video, the aggrieved group appeared to have taken issue with an elder who challenged the selection of a young man as chief.

As a result, the matter was brought before the Asante Traditional Court, where they were summoned to appear before the late king.

In the video, each member of the group was individually questioned about their concerns, with one of the elderly men explaining why he objected to the selection of the chief.

According to them, they brought the matter before the Asantehene in hopes that he would settle the dispute and restore peace and unity within their community.

Subsequently, the issue was resolved, and the individuals were encouraged to make peace with one another by shaking hands.

The young man whose selection as chief had been challenged was later seen being smeared with a white powdery substance, a traditional symbol in some Ghanaian cultures signifying victory or a favorable outcome after a dispute.

Asantehene lists six factors that disqualify candidates from chieftaincy

The new chief went ahead to swear his allegiance to Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.

Agya Koo Reveals Scary Dream About Daddy Lumba That Leaves Fans Deeply Concerned

0

Ghana’s legendary actor and comedian, Agya Koo, has left fans stunned after revealing that highlife icon Daddy Lumba appeared to him in a terrifying dream that he described as “spiritually deep and alarming.” The veteran actor shared his experience during a live radio interview in Kumasi, sparking intense public discussion and speculation about the meaning behind the mysterious vision.

According to Agya Koo, the dream occurred a few nights ago and felt “so real” that he woke up trembling and confused. In his narration, he explained that Daddy Lumba appeared before him in a dimly lit room, dressed in white, with a face that looked sorrowful and distant. What followed, he said, was both “scary and symbolic.”

“In the dream, Lumba stood in front of me and didn’t say a word. He just looked at me with deep sadness. Then suddenly, the lights went off, and I heard him say, ‘Ghana doesn’t understand me yet.’ That’s when I woke up, shaking,” Agya Koo revealed.

The actor admitted he had no idea what the dream meant but believed it carried a powerful spiritual message, possibly connected to Daddy Lumba’s life, legacy, or something yet to happen. “I don’t joke with dreams like this,” he added. “Sometimes, God uses such visions to reveal hidden things.”

Fans and social media users have been quick to react, with many urging Agya Koo to reach out directly to Daddy Lumba to discuss the vision. Others, however, dismissed it as a simple dream fueled by the actor’s admiration for the legendary musician.

Some spiritual leaders who have commented on the viral story have suggested that the dream could symbolize a spiritual battle or a divine message about fame and legacy, especially since both Agya Koo and Daddy Lumba are cultural icons who have deeply influenced Ghana’s entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, close sources from Daddy Lumba’s camp have not responded to the revelation, and the musician himself has remained silent about the matter. However, his fans have flooded social media with prayers and goodwill messages, expressing hope that everything is well with the highlife star.

A cultural analyst who spoke to Opera News Ghana noted that such revelations often spark curiosity in Ghana’s entertainment space because “Ghanaian believe strongly in spiritual communication, especially through dreams.” He added that Agya Koo’s sincerity and emotional tone suggest that he was genuinely affected by the experience.

As the story continues to trend online, many Ghanaian are watching closely to see whether Daddy Lumba will respond — or if Agya Koo’s chilling dream might carry a deeper message yet to be understood.

Mahama is behaving like a bully if… – Ghanamannti

0

Former Convention People’s Party (CPP) running mate, Woyoe Ghanamannti Esq., has hit back at NDC lawyer Abraham Amaliba for describing former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as a “crybaby.”

He says such remarks are disrespectful to the judiciary and diminish the principle of constitutional equality.

Speaking on Prime Insight, Ghanamannti argued that if Justice Torkonoo is being labelled a “cry baby” for exercising her constitutional rights through the courts, then President John Dramani Mahama’s conduct could equally be described as that of a “bully.”

“For my learned friend Amaliba to say that the former Chief Justice of this republic is behaving like a crybaby, then I can equally also say that the President is behaving like a bully. The Chief Justice is the third most important person in this country,” he stated.

He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to elevate the President above all other constitutional authorities, warning that such attitudes undermine the sovereignty of the people.

“Article 1 of the Constitution says the sovereignty of this nation resides in the people. Government, whether NDC or NPP, exercises authority on behalf of the people. Saying ‘the President, the President’ as if he is more important than all of us is wrong,” he argued.

He added, “And it’s not about President Mahama. It’s not about President Akufo-Addo. It’s not about Kwame Nkrumah. It’s not about any of them or their persona. I’m talking about the position, let us begin to learn from this concept that the President is not a demi god.”

According to Ghanamannti, the office of the President must not be treated as untouchable. “It’s only in Africa, and only in Ghana, that we make presidents demigods. Presidents are not demigods. They are ordinary citizens like us, chosen through political parties and elections. They can be removed. Article 69 of the Constitution is clear on that,” he stressed.

He further defended Justice Torkonoo’s legal challenge, insisting she was acting within her constitutional rights and contributing to the strengthening of Ghana’s democracy.

“What the woman is doing falls under Article 33 and Order 55 — she’s seeking judicial review of an administrative process, and that’s her right. She has allowed the process to go on and is now seeking a review. That is within her mandate and deepens our democratic and legal ethos,” Ghanamannti explained.

He urged respect for institutional balance and cautioned against narratives that place the President above constitutional scrutiny.

“It’s not about President Mahama or President Akufo-Addo or even Kwame Nkrumah. It’s about the position, whoever occupies it is not a demigod. When such matters arise, let’s give due respect to the Chief Justice and to the rule of law,” he said.

Background

Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s legal battle arises from her challenge to the procedure that led to her removal from office.

In 2025, several petitions were sent to the President seeking her removal under Article 146 of the Constitution for alleged misconduct. President John Mahama referred the petitions to a five-member committee headed by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang to investigate the claims.

Before the committee concluded its work, Justice Torkonoo filed suits at the Supreme Court and High Court, arguing the process was unconstitutional and biased. Despite her court actions, the committee completed its work and submitted its report to the President.

Subsequently, President Mahama nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice — a move Torkonoo is now contesting in court, insisting the appointment is premature until her substantive case is resolved.

O’Hara tells Spurs to ‘go all out’ to unite Ghana stars Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged the club to make a bold move for Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, saying the Ghanaian would be the perfect attacking partner for compatriot Mohammed Kudus in north London.

Semenyo has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, registering six goals and three assists—second only to Erling Haaland in total goal involvements.

His form has reignited interest from top clubs, despite signing a new Bournemouth contract after turning down approaches from Manchester United and Tottenham last summer.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who originally signed Semenyo for Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023, is also known to be a strong admirer.

The Cherries reportedly value the 25-year-old at over £75 million following his explosive start to the campaign.

Speaking on talkSPORT, O’Hara said Tottenham should capitalise on their recent £100 million investment from majority shareholders ENIC to strengthen the squad.

“I’d love him at Spurs. I think they should go all out for him,” O’Hara said.

“Spurs is an amazing club for him—a massive football club, a brilliant stadium, and amazing facilities.”

However, his co-host, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, questioned whether Tottenham’s current ambitions would be enough for the in-form Ghanaian, saying: “He can do better than Spurs.”

United Party proposes coalition govts, calls for end to presidential runoffs

0

The United Party (UP Plus) is calling for a major constitutional reform to end presidential runoff elections in Ghana, proposing instead a coalition-based system of governance in cases where no candidate secures an outright majority.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday October 18, General Secretary of UP Plus, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, outlined the party’s long-term vision built on two key pillars: economic revival and structural constitutional change.

He said the party is determined to offer a credible, lasting alternative to the two dominant political parties—NPP and NDC—that have shaped Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

“We have two paths for sustainability,” Buaben Asamoa said. “The first path is the necessity of economic revival and growth, and many are worried about that. We expect to bring many on board.”

He noted that the second path, which is just as critical to the party’s vision, involves reforming Ghana’s constitutional framework to create more inclusive governance. Specifically, he pointed to Article 63(4) and (5) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides for runoff elections when no presidential candidate obtains more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

“This duopoly has unfortunately been strengthened by the structure of the Fourth Republican Constitution,” he said.

“You’ll realise that neither of the dominant parties has total control over voter sentiment. There are often runoffs. We are saying that Article 63(4) and (5), which require a runoff, should be done away with.”

In place of runoffs, UP Plus is proposing a system where parties that fall short of the 50+1 threshold in the first round should be required to form coalition governments, bringing together smaller parties that supported them during the election.

“If on the first run, a party makes 50+1, they are home and dry. If they don’t, the smaller parties they would have used as horses to get past 50+1 should be cobbled together and go into government with them as governing partners,” he explained.

The comments reinforce UP Plus’s broader political philosophy — one that seeks to unify rather than divide. The party, which rebranded from Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change and officially registered with the Electoral Commission on October 3, 2025, describes itself as a centrist force focused on competence, inclusion, and solutions.

“We are an emergent force, but we are not the sole third force. This is what will shock the duopoly,” Buaben Asamoa said. “This is not Alan Kyerematen’s personal party. This is a party that galvanises opinion around national problems — especially the economy.”

Earlier, UP Plus Director of Communications Solomon Owusu also stressed that the party aims to unite talents from across the political divide and civil society to form a government rooted in merit and integrity.

Chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface has pledged that UP Plus will stand for transformational leadership, and Alan Kyerematen has called the movement a “new dawn” in Ghanaian politics.

Nearly 600,000 SHS freshers report to school nationwide

0

Nearly 600,000 first-year students are reporting to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country today (October 18) as the 2025/2026 academic year officially begins.

Thousands of families, many travelling long distances to see their wards admitted, are filled with a mix of excitement and a touch of anxiety.

At various lorry terminals, fresh students were seen in their new uniforms, carrying trunks and chop boxes packed with items prescribed by their schools.

On several campuses, scenes of joy and anticipation were evident as students arrived, eager to begin their new academic journey.

Parents and guardians were busy assisting with registration and accommodation, while school authorities worked to manage the large numbers and ensure a smooth process.

A few schools, including Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School at Legon in Accra and Mawuli School in the Volta Region, have deferred their admissions to later dates for different reasons.

Authorities at PRESEC say the school will undergo fumigation to provide a clean and healthy environment for the first-year students, following the departure of continuing students on Thursday, October 17, 2025.

Mawuli School, on the other hand, is finalising activities marking its 75th anniversary before admitting the new students.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured parents that all placed students will be admitted as part of efforts to guarantee access to secondary education for all qualified candidates.

United Party will shock Ghana’s political establishment

0

Interim General Secretary of the newly formed United Party, also known as UP Plus, Yaw Buaben Asamoa has stated that while the party is an emerging political force, it should not be boxed in as just another third-party alternative.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday October 18, he emphasised that UP Plus is not merely riding on the popularity of its founder, Alan Kyerematen, but is focused on building a broad-based political movement that directly addresses Ghana’s economic challenges.

“We are an emergent force, but we are not the sole third force. This is the difference. This is what will shock the duopoly,” he said, referring to the long-standing political dominance of the NPP and NDC.

“This is not Alan Kyerematen’s United Party or some personal third force. No, no, no. This is a party that is going to galvanise opinion around a problem — the economy. Because neither of the two [NPP and NDC] have been able to progress us in the area of the economy. We are a centrist party.”

His comments build on remarks made earlier by the party’s Director of Communications, Solomon Owusu, during an appearance on Channel One Newsroom. Owusu described UP Plus as a political platform aimed at uniting the best minds from all corners of Ghana’s political and civil society landscape.

“It signifies a party that is ready to depose the duopoly that has led this country into its worst ebb,” Owusu said, stressing that the UP Plus mission goes beyond winning power to reshaping Ghana’s leadership culture. “We have been treated to misgovernance by the NPP and the NDC, and the majority of Ghanaians want to see a change.”

Founded on the principles of inclusivity, competence, and economic transformation, UP Plus is a rebranded version of Alan Kyerematen’s earlier political movement, the Movement for Change. The party officially received its registration certificate from the Electoral Commission on October 3, 2025.

At its launch, party chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface stated that UP Plus stands for transformational leadership, integrity, and transparency. Alan Kyerematen described the new party as a “new dawn” in Ghanaian politics, promising a government that will prioritize solutions over slogans.

With its centrist positioning and bold rhetoric against the political status quo, UP Plus is expected to play a significant role in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2028 general elections.

Your actions reflect immaturity for CJ role

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Dr Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has slammed the former CJ Gertrude Torkornoo following her recent judicial review application, seeking the court to stop the appointment of Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.

In an interview with JoyNews, and monitored by GhanaWeb on October 17, 2025, Kwaku Ansa-Asare noted that the former CJ’s actions indicate that she was not ready to occupy the position as the country’s Chief Justice.

He explained that Getrude Torkornoo’s actions show that she lacked the maturity to occupy the CJ position, adding that her judicial review application has no legal standing.

Torkornoo files application seeking to stop appointment of Baffoe-Bonnie as CJ

“A former Chief Justice must understand that she is bound by the constitution. If she does not appreciate the CJ removal process and respect it, she is demonstrating that when she was appointed, she was immature,” he said.

Dr Kwaku Ansa-Asare additionally noted that the sacked former Chief Justice should back off from her recent action.

According to him, Torkornoo’s attempt to bring back her sacked case would amount to nothing.

“Because she was immature, she is suffering all these things. She has to stop. The grounds are frivolous; the entire acting is vexatious and frivolous… She cannot resurrect the case,” he added.

Background

On October 16, 2025, the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, filed a judicial review application seeking to stop the possible consideration and appointment of Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.

According to a report filed through her lawyer, Kwabena Adu-Kusi, she submitted two reports to support her legal challenge.

One of the reports, it said, is from a committee chaired by Justice Dr Owusu-Dapa and the other from the National Signals Bureau.

Both reports identify Francis Baiden, a Judicial Service staff member in charge of the e-Justice system, as the prime suspect in the tampering of judicial document.

‘The Chief Justice seat is not a traditional stool to claim’ – Kwaku Ansa-Asare jabs Torkornoo

Torkornoo argues it is illogical to remove her from office for transferring Baiden after evidence showed he was involved in tampering with documents in the Gyakye Quayson case.

She therefore seeks to quash the proceedings of the Justice Pwamang-led committee, including its reasons and recommendations for her removal from office, as well as all other procedures and processes related to her dismissal as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

How the Black Stars used 46 players on the road to the 2026 World Cup

0

When Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign began under Chris Hughton in November 2023, few would have imagined that 46 players would wear the Black Stars jersey by the end of the road.

From debutants like Caleb Yirenkyi and Jonas Adjetey to the ever-reliable Jordan Ayew, every game felt like a new experiment, and every lineup told its own story.

But the final numbers speak of evolution. Ghana are through to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a journey that stretched across two managerial reigns, countless tactical tweaks, and a squad rotation that revealed both the team’s growing depth and its search for a settled identity.

The early uncertainty

The campaign began under Hughton with cautious optimism. His side edged Madagascar 1-0 in Kumasi, but that fragile victory was followed by a sobering 1-0 defeat away to Comoros, a result that exposed the team’s lack of cohesion and sharpness.

Alan Shearer urges Yoane Wissa to snub AFCON and show loyalty to Newcastle

In those opening fixtures, Hughton leaned on experience: Daniel Amartey, Kudus Mohammed, Inaki Williams, and Jordan Ayew formed the core. But while the names looked solid on paper, performances lacked fluency. Ghana had the talent; they just didn’t have rhythm.

That brief, faltering start triggered a reset, and the return of Otto Addo, a man whose connection with the squad had never truly faded after his first stint.

Otto Addo’s rebuild

When Addo returned, he didn’t just restore belief; he opened the door wider. In his eight matches in charge, Ghana won seven and drew one, scoring freely and defending with composure.

Behind that success, though, was a constant shuffle: 46 players earned minutes across 10 qualifiers. It wasn’t chaos; it was calibration.

Gideon Mensah (9 games), Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Jordan Ayew (all 10 games) became the campaign’s heartbeat, the spine Addo could trust. Around them, he tested layers of youth and returnees.

Players like Jerome Opoku (5 games) and Benjamin Asare (6 games) quietly became key figures. Jonas Adjetey (4games) and Caleb Yirenkyi (4 games), the newcomers, earned valuable exposure.

Elisha Owusu (4 games) and Salis Samed (5 games) anchored midfield roles in different phases, ensuring the team never looked short of energy.

Every inclusion had intent, whether to plug a tactical hole, rest a senior figure, or test a new chemistry.

A blend of experience and emergence

The numbers tell a clear story of balance.

Kudus Mohammed, ever-present in all 10 qualifiers, was Ghana’s creative compass, decisive in tight games, expressive when space opened.

Thomas Partey (7 appearances) returned to fitness midway and brought control, dictating tempo from deep.

Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu both played seven matches, forming Ghana’s most trusted defensive pair.

Gideon Mensah’s nine games underscored his underrated consistency at left-back, a position Ghana had struggled to stabilize in years past.

But rotation wasn’t just a necessity; it was a strategy. Injuries to key players forced Otto Addo to test his bench. Fatawu Issahaku’s ACL injury in November 2024 and Alidu Seidu’s setback left voids. Others, like Ernest Nuamah (5 games) and Kamaldeen Sulemana (5 games), filled the attacking flair.

Kojo Peprah and Prince Owusu got brief tastes of the international stage. Even veterans like Andre Ayew (one appearance) and Daniel Amartey were given symbolic roles, reminders of continuity amidst change.

The goalkeeping shift

Ghana’s goalkeeping story through the qualifiers was a quiet transformation. The campaign began with Richard Ofori, who started the first two matches under Chris Hughton.

When Otto Addo returned to take charge, he opted for Lawrence Ati Zigi in his first two games, valuing the Switzerland-based goalkeeper’s agility and international exposure.

But in March 2025, Otto Addo made a bold and defining call, handing Benjamin Asare a surprise debut against Chad.

It was a gamble that quickly paid off. Asare impressed immediately with commanding performances and assured handling, and he went on to feature in six consecutive matches, becoming the undisputed No.1 as Ghana closed out qualification in style.

The midfield

The midfield was perhaps Ghana’s biggest strength throughout the qualifiers, a blend of experience, energy, and adaptability that gave Otto Addo the tactical flexibility to shape his team to any challenge.

Thomas Partey anchored the middle in seven matches, dictating tempo and offering leadership whenever fit. Salis Abdul Samed featured in five games, providing the balance and bite that allowed Ghana to press with confidence.

Elisha Owusu, with four appearances, added control and composure in tighter fixtures, while Abu Francis and Nuhu Adams, both with two games, offered solid rotation options when Partey was unavailable.

Further depth came from Majeed Ashimeru (two games) and Kwasi Sibo (three games), each adding their own texture to the team’s midfield dynamics. Together, these players formed a revolving engine room that kept Ghana’s performances consistent across ten qualifiers.

The attack

Otto Addo’s forward line evolved game by game. Antoine Semenyo and Jordan Ayew were ever-present, playing all 10 matches. Their movement and pressing opened doors for Inaki Williams (6 matches) and Kamaldeen Sulemana (5) to rotate fluidly across the flanks.

Then came the spark from Nuamah and Issahaku, young, fearless, and raw. Their inclusion symbolized Ghana’s next generation learning on the world stage.

By the time the campaign ended, Ghana weren’t just winning; they were entertaining, averaging nearly two goals per game under Addo, a drastic improvement from the cagey Hughton start.

Conclusion

In total, 46 players wore the Black Stars shirt during the qualification. Some came and went quietly. Others like Benjamin Asare, Gideon Mensah, Caleb Yirenkyi, Kwasi Sibo, and Jordan Ayew left lasting impressions.

But collectively, they formed the base of a squad now brimming with competition and depth.

Addo’s biggest task heading into the World Cup will be trimming his 46-man pool down to a cohesive 26. But his advantage lies in continuity, the core group that drove Ghana through qualifying will be maintained, providing stability, chemistry, and a clear tactical identity heading into the global stage.

“I don’t know what will happen in eight or nine months, but I guess the core of this squad will stay. They deserve it,” Otto Addo told 3sports.

The numbers might suggest inconsistency, but Ghana’s use of 46 players was the story of a team in transformation, rediscovering belief through adaptability.

Hidden Chapter Of Daddy Lumba’s Life Emerges, Stirring Tensions Between His Two Wives

0

A new revelation about the late Ghanaian highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, has surfaced online, sparking mixed emotions and renewed conversations about his private life. The story, which has quickly gone viral, centers around his widow, Akosua Serwaa, who many now describe as the woman holding “the real power” in the musician’s legacy.

According to a viral video shared by BigScoutMedia, long-hidden details about Lumba’s personal relationships have finally come to light, exposing a side of his family life that had remained private for years. The revelation has reportedly created tension between Akosua Serwaa and another woman previously linked to Lumba, as conflicting claims over the late singer’s legacy and estate emerge.

Sources close to the family suggest that the newly surfaced information has made matters “more complicated” for both women, each of whom played significant roles in Lumba’s life at different points. While Akosua Serwaa is recognized as his legal wife, the other woman is said to have shared deep emotional and creative bonds with the musician during his lifetime.

In the video, Akosua Serwaa is portrayed as a strong and composed woman who now carries the responsibility of preserving Lumba’s image and managing aspects of his legacy. Fans have since flooded social media with mixed reactions — some praising her resilience, while others question the secrecy surrounding Lumba’s relationships and family life.

The revelation comes at a sensitive time, as the late artist’s funeral preparations continue. Many close associates have called for peace and privacy for the family, urging the public to focus on celebrating Daddy Lumba’s unmatched contribution to Ghanaian music rather than dwelling on personal controversies.

As the story unfolds, one thing remains clear — Akosua Serwaa’s influence in Lumba’s posthumous affairs has become undeniable, marking her as a central figure in shaping how the legend’s memory will be preserved for generations to come.

Bryan Acheampong takes unity message to Ashanti Region as nationwide tour continues

0

A presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has arrived in the Ashanti Region today as part of the continuation of his nationwide constituency tour, aimed at strengthening grassroots support and consolidating the internal unity of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The tour, which forms part of Dr. Acheampong’s wider political strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections, has so far seen him visit over 76 constituencies across the country—including nine in the Ashanti Region alone.

His message of unity, discipline, and grassroots empowerment is said to be resonating strongly with the party’s base.

According to his Communications Directorate, the second leg of the Ashanti Region tour will span 10 days and include visits to the remaining constituencies within the region, widely regarded as the political heartland of the NPP.

The itinerary includes:

  1. Town Hall meetings with youth and community leaders.

2. Stakeholder dialogues with traditional rulers, clergy, and senior party figures.

3. Media engagements to further communicate his vision and rally support.

The Communications Directorate described the tour as part of a broader initiative to bring the party together, reinforce discipline at the grassroots level, and position the NPP favourably for the 2028 elections.

Dr. Acheampong’s leadership style — characterised as bold, inclusive, and forward-thinking — is reportedly gaining traction among party faithful and stakeholders alike.

In a statement released on October 18, the campaign team encouraged NPP supporters, the media, and the general public to follow updates from the tour through official campaign platforms and Dr. Acheampong’s social media channels.

Torkornoo has proven she wasn’t “matured” to be CJ

0

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has criticised former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo for what he describes as “immature” conduct following her decision to seek a court order halting the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.

Justice Torkornoo has filed an application at the High Court in Accra seeking to quash all proceedings and findings of the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee, which was constituted under Article 146 of the Constitution to investigate petitions for her removal from office.

She is also asking the court to set aside the presidential warrant that removed her and stop the ongoing process to appoint a new Chief Justice.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, October 17, 2025, Mr. Ansa-Asare said he had no sympathy for the former Chief Justice, describing her recent actions as evidence of “gross abuse and disrespect” for Ghana’s legal system.

“I am sympathetic that she is losing everything, but as far as the law is concerned, I don’t sympathise with her at all; if anything at all. She is now demonstrating gross abuse and disrespect of the laws of Ghana,” he said.

According to him, Justice Torkornoo’s behaviour vindicates his earlier stance that she lacked the maturity required for the high judicial office she once held.

“She is proving me right that she wasn’t mature enough to have been appointed to fill the vacancy of the high office of Chief Justice. A former Chief Justice ought not to do that. Now that she is doing it, she is proving me right when, in October last year, I said that her body language alone rendered her unfit to hold the position of Chief Justice. She has now proven me right,” he stressed.

Mr. Ansa-Asare further urged the President to prioritise temperament and emotional maturity in future appointments to the position of Chief Justice.

“This must go to our President whenever they are making nominations; they have to take the person’s maturity and temperament as factors into account,” he added.

Former Chief Justice Torkornoo’s legal action, filed on Thursday, October 16, 2025, seeks to halt the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who is scheduled to appear before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee in the coming days.

Justice Torkornoo was removed from office on September 1, 2025, by President John Mahama, acting on the recommendation of a committee established under Article 146 of the Constitution. The committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, found her guilty of misconduct, including the misuse of public funds and breaches of constitutional provisions, after consulting the Council of State.

Highlife great Daddy Lumba died on July 26, 2025, sparking a heated legal battle between his two wives, Akosua Serwaa and Odo Broni.

The late singer married Akosua Serwaa in Germany in the 1990s and welcomed three children with her, before relocating to Ghana in the mid-to-late 2000s to start a new life with Priscilla Ofori Atta, popularly known as Odo Broni.

Following his death, a legal tussle has broken out between the two women over who should be declared as his legal spouse.

Supporters of Odo Broni have slammed Akosua Serwaa as an opportunist who abandoned the musician when he fell ill and now wants to reclaim her spot as a wife to inherit his properties.

Below is a TikTok video of media personality Captain Smart accusing Akosua Serwaa of abandoning Daddy Lumba.

Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer denies she abandoned Lumba

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, William Kusi, Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer, denied claims that she abandoned Daddy Lumba.

He said the late singer left her in Germany to move to Ghana for his own reasons, leaving her with three kids to cater for on her own.

The lawyer explained that Akosua Serwaa took a bank loan for the family and was obligated as a German citizen to repay it, something the late singer knew.

William Kusi said Akosua Serwaa later found out that her husband was cheating on her with Odo Broni, but remained mute due to his profile as a public figure.

He added that when Daddy Lumba fell ill and was asked by his wife to return to Germany, he claimed he had no faith in foreign doctors and preferred to remain in Ghana, an action he described as illogical.

William Kusi asked Ghanaians to wipe away the impression that Akosua Serwaa abandoned her husband because her husband rather left her for his own selfish reasons.

The TikTok video of Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer speaking is below.

0

Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been named the Ghana Premier League Goalkeeper of the Month for September, following an outstanding run of performances that underlined his growing influence between the posts.

The experienced 33-year-old shot-stopper enjoyed a flawless month, keeping three clean sheets in three matches — the best record among all goalkeepers in the league during the period.

His commanding displays helped Hearts of Oak secure two victories and a draw, scoring twice and conceding none throughout September.

Asare’s composure, sharp reflexes and communication with his defence have been central to the Phobians’ solid start to the campaign.

His consistency has also lifted Hearts to fifth place on the Ghana Premier League table after Matchday five, reaffirming the club’s ambitions to challenge for honours this season.

He beat strong competition from Abdul Ganiu of Karela United, Lawrence Osei of Heart of Lions, and Kwame Aziz of Vision FC to claim the award.

Asare’s impressive form has not gone unnoticed beyond the domestic scene, with Black Stars coach Otto Addo identifying him as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.

For his achievement, the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper will receive a special prize package from the Ex-Goalkeepers Union, which includes gloves, a branded towel, water bottles, and a T-shirt.

Government consultant orders eviction of illegal occupants at Madina Zongo Junction, Libya Quarters

Clemence Gyato, the government-appointed consultant overseeing the reclamation of encroached lands Clemence Gyato, the government-appointed consultant overseeing the reclamation of encroached lands

Clemence Gyato, the government-appointed consultant overseeing the reclamation of encroached state lands, has issued a warning to individuals illegally occupying lands around the Madina Zongo Junction and Libya Quarters in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking in an interview with UTV during a national security-led operation to the area on Friday October 17, 2025, Gyato emphasised that most of the lands in question belong to private individuals and not the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly.

He explained that the land was initially released to the Assembly through an agreement with a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to provide a temporary market space for women traders.

“The former MCE came to see us that they wanted to clear the squatters from the roadside and bring them here to sell. So, we agreed. But today, the place has turned into a town that people are living in,” Gyato said.

He added that the government will move swiftly to ensure that all squatters, particularly those who have converted the area into a permanent market and residential settlement, are relocated.

According to Gyato, the Assembly has been given a 21-day notice to clear all illegal occupants from the disputed lands.

“If the government wants to evict you, it gives you at least 21 days’ notice. So, we are telling the Assembly that we are giving them 21 days’ notice to evict people from the premises,” he stated.

He disclosed that the Ghana Police Service has been informed of the situation and urged all relevant government agencies to collaborate in restoring order.

Gyato appealed to the government and key stakeholders to investigate the matter and take immediate steps to bring sanity to the area.

“This place is not land that belongs to the Assembly. We have no arrangement with the Assembly or anyone here. The market here has turned into a town. The police are working on the issue and we are calling on the government to see to it that everyone is evicted and the matter properly resolved,” he stressed.

The consultant reiterated his commitment to ensuring that state and private lands are protected from encroachment, warning that future operations would be extended to other parts of the capital where similar illegal occupations have been reported.

There’s an old African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This timeless saying reflects the true essence of friendship, collaboration, and teamwork, qualities that are, unfortunately, not always present in some relationships.

In certain circles, friendships can breed unhealthy competitions, with individuals constantly trying to outshine one another rather than support and grow together.

SHS at 12, WASSCE at 15, Lawyer at 21: Youngest lawyer shares his remarkable journey

However, a heartwarming photo has surfaced online, beautifully capturing the essence of a strong bond, relationship and perfectly echoing the wisdom of the African proverb.

The photo, which has since gone viral, captured four unique moments shared by a group of friends who were among the 824 lawyers recently called to the Bar on October 10, 2025, as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court.

According to a post shared on October 15, 2025, by an X user named Erasmus, he explained the story behind the four-photo collage.

He shared that the group of friends had made a pact during their first year of law school to recreate their original photo when they were eventually called to the Bar together.

“We promised ourselves five years ago to recreate these pictures when called to the bar together,” portions of the post read.

According to him, the friend group, made up of six individuals, took their first photo together during their first year in law school.

In that photo, they appeared young and seemingly inexperienced, just beginning their journeys into the legal profession.

The second photo was taken during their induction into the Ghana School of Law, while the third and fourth frames captured the moment they were called to the Bar as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Erasmus’ post has since received warm congratulatory messages from other users and well-wishers, who noted that the friends-group was intentional about their growth and the strength of their bond.

Bank of Kenya moves to build gold reserves to strengthen shilling

0

Kenya has followed Ghana’s example and joined the growing trend of African central banks purchasing gold to boost their reserves and reduce overreliance on foreign exchange, as well as the free fall of local currencies.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia first proposed the idea for Ghana and three years ago, the government announced that the Bank of Ghana would begin buying gold to build the nation’s reserves.

The initiative was aimed at reducing dependence on foreign exchange, stabilising fuel prices, strengthening the cedi and supporting overall economic growth.

Ghana’s gold reserves have since grown significantly from a mere seven tonnes at the start of the programme to over 30 tonnes currently with several African countries now emulating Ghana’s success story.

The latest country to do so is Kenya, which plans to buy gold to diversify its reserves.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has already held talks with the Bank of England on matters including bullion storage.

According to several reports, including one by Bloomberg, Kenya’s Central Bank Governor, Kamau Thugge, said the plan to incorporate gold into the country’s reserves is aimed at diversifying Kenya’s foreign assets and helping to stabilise the local currency, the Kenyan shilling.

African finance ministers endorse Ghana’s GoldBod model

The report noted that the strategy is also part of Kenya’s broader effort to reduce reliance on the US dollar and promote long-term economic stability.

Kenya is optimistic about improving its gold reserves, much like Ghana has done, and has held discussions with the Bank of England on providing storage facilities.

“We have talked to the Bank of England and other banks to see how we go about it where it will be stored, those kinds of things,” Central Bank Governor Kamau Thugge said in an interview in Washington.

“I’m hoping that we can do it as soon as is practical because we’re ready to move.”

Given the rapid rise in gold prices this year, Kenya hopes to benefit from the opportunity, even though it is joining the effort relatively late.

“Those who got in early have made a killing,” Thugge remarked.

“Those who get in late can also be killed. So, it’s important that we hold a level where, should there be a reversal in the price of gold, it doesn’t really have a huge impact on our holdings,” he added.

Other African countries that have followed Ghana’s lead include Zambia, Uganda, and Rwanda, with many others including Nigeria, expected to adopt similar policies, especially after the African Development Bank (AfDB) recommended the gold-buying strategy to African nations earlier this year.

The rise of Kwasi Sibo

0

Kwasi Sibo is a player of the Black Stars Kwasi Sibo is a player of the Black Stars

Kwasi Sibo’s journey is one of quiet determination, steady growth, and seizing opportunity. Born on June 2, 1998, in Wa, Ghana, Sibo began his youth football with Cheetah FC, a club based in Kasoa.

In September 2017, he left Ghana for Europe, signing with Armenian side Banants (later Urartu), his first step into professional football abroad.

His next stop was England. Watford FC acquired him in 2018 on a long-term deal.

Although he didn’t make a competitive appearance for the first team, the move opened doors. He was loaned to KF Skënderbeu in Albania in 2019, where he gained valuable experience.

Then came a switch to Spain; he was loaned to UD Ibiza, where over two seasons (2019–2021), he developed further and helped Ibiza reach the Segunda División.

Black Stars rise to 73rd in latest FIFA World Rankings

After his time at Ibiza, Sibo played for Betis Deportivo (Real Betis’ B team) and then SD Amorebieta, where he clocked up significant minutes and proved himself reliable in midfield.

In July 2024, his career reached a new peak. He signed a two-year contract with Real Oviedo.

From the start, he became a key player in midfield. In the 2024–25 season, he made 34 league appearances for Oviedo in La Liga 2, scored once, provided an assist, and played in all four games of the promotion play-offs.

Oviedo secured promotion to La Liga, returning after a 24-year absence.

Sibo’s performances didn’t go unnoticed in Ghana. In 2025, he earned a debut for the Black Stars in World Cup qualifying, playing in the match against Mali, where he showed composure, defensive solidity, and the ability to help build from midfield.

After earning his debut, Sibo’s rise with the Black Stars has been nothing short of poetic. What began as a late call-up, prompted by an injury to a senior midfielder who left the camp, quickly turned into a breakthrough moment.

He started all three of Ghana’s World Cup qualifying matches since his introduction, bringing calm assurance to the heart of midfield.

In the Mali clash at the Accra Sports Stadium, his first home appearance, the crowd rose to their feet as he was substituted late on, a standing ovation for a player few had expected to feature, let alone excel.

Composed on the ball, intelligent in positioning, and fearless in duels, Sibo has embodied the discipline and work ethic that have defined his steady climb through Europe’s lower leagues.

In just a few months, he has gone from being a fringe figure to one of Otto Addo’s most trusted midfield options.

“I Regret Everything I Said I Just Want Peace,” — Lady Who Blamed Odo Bronii for Daddy Lumba’s Death

0

According to a report by Ghpage on Friday, October 17, 2025, a Ghanaian woman who once caused a storm online after claiming that Daddy Lumba’s hit song Odo Bronii was responsible for the legendary singer’s supposed death has now admitted that her words were driven by pain and heartbreak.

In a fresh interview making waves on social media, the woman finally opened up about why she made the shocking statement — and why she now regrets every bit of it.

“I spoke out of a broken heart,” she said, breaking down in tears. “After the video went viral, I couldn’t sleep or eat. I was in pain, and I said things I shouldn’t have.”

According to her, she wasn’t trying to attack Daddy Lumba personally but was defending a woman she called Akosua Serwaa, whom she believes to be the musician’s rightful wife. The woman explained that she had gone through a similar betrayal in her own life, which made her react emotionally instead of thinking carefully.

“I’ve been in that position before — when you suffer with a man, then another woman comes between you. That’s why I spoke that way,” she confessed.

Now, after the clip spread like wildfire across Ghanaian social media, she says she has been unable to handle the backlash.

“People insult me every day online. I regret everything I said. I just want peace,” she pleaded.

As of now, no credible report has confirmed Daddy Lumba’s death, and fans are urging the public to stop spreading false claims.

The woman’s emotional confession has since sparked conversations about how heartbreak, social media pressure, and misinformation can ruin reputations — and how easily one emotional statement can spiral out of control in the digital age.

Igbo King’s Subchief Sparks Controversy in Ghana

0

The enstoolment of a subchief by the Igbo King in Ghana has ignited a wave of controversy across social media platforms. Despite previous denials about establishing a kingdom, the king’s recent actions in a suburb of Accra have raised eyebrows and stirred debate. The video, widely circulated online, shows the ceremonial proceedings, prompting many to question the implications of such a move within Ghana’s traditional chieftaincy structure.

Social media users have expressed outrage, with some viewing the act as a breach of cultural protocol and others interpreting it as a symbolic assertion of Igbo identity in Ghana. The enstoolment ceremony, which typically signifies the installation of a traditional leader, has led to concerns about jurisdiction, legitimacy, and the potential for ethnic tensions. Critics argue that while cultural preservation is important, it must be balanced with respect for local customs and governance.

The Igbo King, known for his vibrant presence on platforms like Instagram under the handle *ezeigboghanaezeohazurume*, has not publicly addressed the backlash in detail. However, his supporters maintain that the enstoolment was a community-driven initiative aimed at strengthening Igbo unity and representation in Ghana. TikTok clips shared by *ec_comm* further document the event, showcasing traditional attire, rituals, and jubilant celebrations among attendees.

As the debate continues, the incident underscores the complex interplay between diaspora identity, cultural expression, and national sovereignty. Whether this enstoolment marks the beginning of a broader movement or remains an isolated gesture, it has undeniably sparked a conversation about belonging, leadership, and the boundaries of tradition in a multicultural society.

EOCO rescues 26 human trafficking victims in joint operation with QNET

0

The Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) has successfully rescued 26 victims of human trafficking in a coordinated raid carried out on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Quest,” was conducted by EOCO’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in collaboration with QNET, a multinational company known for its wellness and lifestyle products.

The early morning operation, which took place around 10:30am, led to the arrest of nine suspects, including two Ivorians and seven Ghanaians. The rescued individuals comprise 10 Ivorians and 16 Ghanaians, all of whom were allegedly trafficked under false promises of employment opportunities with QNET.

According to EOCO, the victims were lured with fraudulent job offers both within Ghana and abroad by individuals posing as QNET agents. The organisation clarified that these individuals had no legitimate ties to the company and were exploiting QNET’s reputation to carry out their illicit activities.

The suspects are currently in EOCO’s custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.

In a public advisory, EOCO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any individuals or groups claiming to be recruitment agents for QNET. The office reminded the public that earlier this year, in July, EOCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with QNET to combat the use of the company’s name in human trafficking and related criminal activities.

“This operation underscores the importance of our partnership with QNET in tackling the growing issue of trafficking under the guise of employment,” said Faustina Lartey, Head of Public Affairs at EOCO.

EOCO further emphasised its commitment to protecting the public from organised crime and encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the office directly via their official channels.

Kennedy Agyapong is one of the leading aspirants of the NPP Kennedy Agyapong is one of the leading aspirants of the NPP

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has appealed to party members and delegates to heed the voices of ordinary Ghanaians as the party readies itself for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during his campaign tour of the Savannah Region, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament stressed that the NPP’s path to victory depends on aligning with the sentiments of the broader Ghanaian electorate rather than internal preferences.

“These days, I assure you, we are going to protect all of you. We also have the men. But we are not going to use the men to intimidate ourselves,” he said.

He cautioned that winning elections requires listening to the people beyond party lines.

“When you are going to vote, listen to Ghanaians. It’s not only us who are going to vote. It’s not only the NPP people. If it’s only NPP people who will be voting, like the last election, we would have won,” he stated.

Agyapong said he continues to draw overwhelming support from ordinary citizens across the country.

He described himself as the “luckiest man” in Ghanaian politics, attributing his popularity to his honesty and consistency.

“In the history of NPP or Ghana politics, the only luckiest man that has availed himself to contest that every Ghanaian is calling unto him is Kennedy Agyapong,” he said.

The former lawmaker emphasized that the NPP’s focus should be on winning power in 2026 something he believes can only be achieved by presenting a candidate the public trusts.

“We want power. If it’s power we are looking for, then we should listen to what the people of Ghana are saying, not what we the NPPs are saying,” he advised.

Zelensky fails to secure Tomahawk missiles at talks with Trump

0

President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have come away empty-handed from a White House meeting after US President Donald Trump indicated he was not ready to supply sought-after Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.

Zelensky said after the cordial bilateral that he and Trump had talked about long-range missiles, but decided not to make statements on the issue “because the United States does not want an escalation”.

Following the meeting, Trump took to social media to call for Kyiv and Moscow to “stop where they are” and end the war.

The Trump-Zelensky meeting came a day after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone, and agreed to meet him in Hungary soon.

Zelensky believes using Tomahawks to strike at Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Putin’s war economy.

While Trump did not rule it out, his tone at the White House on Friday was non-committal.

“Hopefully they won’t need it, hopefully we’ll be able to get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks,” the US president said, adding that America needed the weapons.

Trump said sending the missiles would be “an escalation, but we’ll be talking about it”.

Asked by the BBC if the Tomahawks had prompted Putin to meet Trump, the US president said: “The threat of that [the missiles] is good, but the threat of that is always there.”

The Ukrainian leader suggested his country could offer drones in exchange for the Tomahawks, prompting smiles and nodding from Trump.

Zelensky also complimented Trump on his role in securing the first phase of a peace deal in the Middle East, suggesting the US leader could build on that momentum to help end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Outside afterwards, Zelensky was asked by a reporter if he thought Putin wanted a deal or was just buying time with the planned meeting with Trump in Budapest.

“I don’t know,” he said, adding that the prospect of Ukraine having Tomahawks had caused Russia to be “afraid because it is a strong weapon”.

Asked if he was leaving Washington more optimistic that Ukraine would get the Tomahawks, he said: “I am realistic.”

In a post on X, Zelensky said he had called European leaders to share details of the meeting with Trump, adding that the “main priority now is to protect as many lives as possible, guarantee security for Ukraine, and strengthen all of us in Europe.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the call with European leaders was “productive” and promised that “the UK will continue to send humanitarian aid and military support”.

In recent days, Trump has shown an openness to the idea of selling the Tomahawks, although Putin warned that such a move would further strain the US-Russian relationship.

On Thursday, Trump said “great progress” was made during a phone call with Putin, with the pair agreeing to face-to-face talks soon in Hungary.

Asked whether Zelensky would be involved in those talks, Trump said before his meeting sitting alongside the Ukrainian president that there was “bad blood” between Putin and Zelenksy.

“We want to make it comfortable for everybody,” he said. “We’ll be involved in threes, but it may be separated.” He added that the three leaders “have to get together”.

Ghana qualify for Centennial World Table Tennis Championships in London

0

Ghana’s women’s national table tennis team, the Black Loopers, have made history by qualifying for the 2026 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships in London, marking a major comeback to the prestigious global stage after several years of absence.

The milestone was achieved after a thrilling 3–2 victory over Angola at the ongoing ITTF-Africa Championships in Tunis, Tunisia, which also served as the continental qualifier for London 2026.

Despite an earlier loss to African powerhouse Egypt, the Ghanaian ladies showed remarkable resilience and fighting spirit to bounce back and secure a spot among the elite teams heading to the centennial edition of the World Championships.

Black Loopers

In their decisive encounter against Angola, Ghana fought from two matches down to complete an incredible comeback. Cynthia Kwabi opened the tie but narrowly lost 2–3 to Ruth Tavares, before Eva Adom-Amankwah also fell 1–3 to Albino Isabel, leaving Ghana under early pressure.

The momentum shifted when Joanita Borteye produced a commanding 3–0 victory over Sousa Kailane to restore hope.

Cynthia Kwabi then returned stronger, sweeping Albino Isabel 3–0 to level the overall score at 2–2. In the decisive final match, Eva Adom-Amankwaa held her nerve to edge past Ruth Tavares 3–2, sealing a dramatic triumph for Ghana and confirming their historic qualification.

With this victory, Ghana clinched second place in their group, securing a continental qualification ticket to London.

GTTA President Mawuko Afadzinu, who is in Tunis for the ITTF-Africa Annual General Meeting, commended the team’s remarkable performance and described the qualification as a proud moment for Ghana table tennis.

The Black Loopers’ qualification coincides with the 100th anniversary of the ITTF World Championships, making Ghana’s return to the world stage even more symbolic and memorable.

In certain circles, friendships can breed unhealthy competitions, with individuals constantly trying to outshine one another rather than support and grow together.

A delegation led by IET-GH President, Henry Kwadwo Boateng, paid a working visit to the refinery A delegation led by IET-GH President, Henry Kwadwo Boateng, paid a working visit to the refinery

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has commended the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for its ongoing rehabilitation works being executed predominantly by Ghanaian engineers and technologists.

A delegation led by IET-GH President, Engr Henry Kwadwo Boateng, paid a working visit to the refinery to observe progress on the facility’s restoration and to express the Institution’s support for the project.

Receiving the delegation, TOR Managing Director, Lawyer Edmond Kombat, described the visit as timely, acknowledging that many IET-GH members were playing key roles in the refinery’s revival.

He reaffirmed TOR’s readiness to collaborate with the Institution to provide professional development and certification opportunities for its staff, in line with the government’s Reset Agenda, which focuses on rebuilding the economy and expanding local employment.

Engr Boateng commended the refinery’s leadership for the bold decision to rely on homegrown expertise, describing it as “a demonstration of confidence in the capacity of Ghanaian engineers to deliver complex technical solutions.”

He encouraged engineers and staff to remain disciplined and united behind the management team.

He further urged them to consider themselves essential partners in the Reset Agenda and to avoid any form of agitation that could impede the refinery’s recovery efforts.

Engr Wonder Davor, IET-GH President-Elect, lauded TOR’s management for its vision and urged sustained collaboration with local professionals to build a refinery that meets modern international standards.

Engr Dr Miriam Eduful, a strong advocate for women in engineering, reminded staff of the importance of adhering to strict safety practices and consistently using protective gear.

As part of the engagement, Lawyer Kombat disclosed plans to launch a structured TOR Training Programme to provide practical learning opportunities for students from KNUST, UENR, UMaT and other technical universities.

He also revealed an upcoming partnership with Middle Eastern refineries to train about 5,000 Ghanaian engineers across various disciplines starting next year.

During a tour of the facility led by Ing Abraham Quayson, the IET-GH delegation visited key sections of the refinery, including the distillation, reforming and power generation units.

TOR’s engineers were credited for successfully completing complex maintenance works previously handled by foreign experts, thereby saving the refinery significant amounts in foreign exchange.

Engr Boateng concluded the visit by commending TOR’s commitment to environmental protection and expressing optimism that the refinery’s restart will mark a major milestone for Ghanaian engineering excellence and national self-reliance.

The emotional comeback story of Faisal Halim

Faisal Halim is a player of Malaysia who has survived an acid attack Faisal Halim is a player of Malaysia who has survived an acid attack

Faisal Halim’s hands tremble slightly as he recalls the day his life changed.

It was a routine afternoon at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara, a place filled with laughter, chatter, and the smell of food courts.

But in a single, horrifying instant, a stranger’s attack with acid left him scarred physically and shaken emotionally.

The burns were severe, lacing his face, neck, and shoulders. Simple movements became excruciating.

Even speaking was a challenge. For a man whose life had revolved around football, it felt like his world had stopped.

Yet, before the tragedy, Faisal had been flying high. At 26, he was Malaysia’s brightest footballing star, dazzling fans with his pace, skill, and creativity.

His defining goal against South Korea in the 2024 Asian Cup was still fresh in memory, a moment of genius that left defenders and goalkeepers flailing.

But after the attack, the ball was a stranger; for weeks, he could not even think about training.

Hospital walls became his world, and every day was a battle with pain, frustration, and the haunting images of the attack.

“Every moment, I would get flashbacks. It was very difficult, and I was mentally down; my morale was very low. Many things have changed. I cannot smile properly now. There were times when I considered not playing football anymore out of fear. But I received a lot of calls and messages every day,” he told the BBC in June 2025.

Recovery was grueling. Physical therapy tested his body; personal training tested his patience.

Every movement was a reminder of what he had lost. But step by step, Faisal reclaimed his strength.

Three months later, he was back on the bench for Selangor in a semi-final, a moment he describes as “quietly victorious.”

The real triumph came months later. Faisal’s first goal post-recovery was electric: a hat-trick in a resounding win, with every strike a statement that he was not defeated.

The celebration, arms outstretched, voice lifted in triumph, felt like reclaiming more than just a game. It was reclaiming life itself.

Faisal’s return to the national team, his fearless runs down the wing, and his relentless drive on the ball have inspired not only fans but a nation that watched him endure and overcome.

Coaches speak of his “unbreakable spirit” and “ability to move people beyond the game.”

Now, Faisal’s focus is simple: family, football, and living each day with courage.

The malls can wait.

The crowds can wait. What matters is the pitch, the place where he proves, again and again, that he is more than a survivor; he is a fighter.

“I am not scared, but I just don’t want something like that to happen again. So, I don’t go out anymore. Once training is done, I go home to spend time with my son, my wife, and my family.”
