Ondo Govt Under Scrutiny As Petitions Demand Probe Into Akeredolu’s Death

Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, has confirmed the receipt of multiple petitions calling for a coroner’s inquest into the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Ajulo made this known on Monday in a statement made available to journalists, noting that it was within the legal rights of citizens to seek clarity when doubts arise about such high-profile deaths.

“The public has every right under the Coroners Law of Ondo State to demand its invocation when there are legitimate concerns,” Ajulo stated, emphasising that the Ministry of Justice would follow due process.

He revealed that petitions had come from various groups, including professional bodies and residents of Owo, Akeredolu’s hometown, all calling for a thorough investigation into what they described as “troubling inconsistencies.”

Ajulo stressed that no one would be presumed guilty, nor would the process be influenced by sentiment or politics.

He clarified that any steps such as exhumation or summoning witnesses would be at the discretion of the designated Coroner Judge.

“If invitations or arrests need to be made, the process will not deviate from doing the needful,” Ajulo added.

He also called on all stakeholders and the general public to remain calm and respectful of the memory of the late governor, urging that discussions surrounding his death should be approached with “civility and dignity.”

Reaffirming Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to justice, Ajulo said, “No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection. Where the law provides a remedy, this government will not be found wanting.”
