Chelsea Beat 10-Player Benfica In Extra Time To Reach Quarter Final

Chelsea moved into the Club World Cup quarter-finals with an extra-time win over Portuguese’s side Benfica which featured a two-hour weather delay at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The Blues broke the deadlock in the 64th minute through Reece James’ direct free kick that beat Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

The game was, however, suspended in the 85th minute for two hours due to adverse weather conditions.

After the match resumed, referee awarded a penalty to Benfica after consulting the technology in the 90+5 minute, through which Ángel Di María scored the equalizing goal for Benfica.

In the 92nd minute of the first extra time, Benfica played with ten players after the expulsion of Bragança, and then Christopher Nkunku scored the second goal for the Blues in the 108th minute of the second extra time.

In the 114th minute, Pedro Neto scored the third goal for Chelsea, while Kiernan scored the fourth goal for the Blues in the 117th minute.

Chelsea will be facing a Friday quarter-final in Philadelphia against Brazil’s Palmeiras.
