TechCabal:Some African diaspora are returning to the continent to build startups despite challenges

Doctorbase CEO, Ahmed Mujtaba, was disconnected from his engineering and operations team members in Sudan for a month in October 2021 when the Sudanese government shut down the internet.

This event led to Mujtaba considering whether building a startup in Sudan was worth it. However, he persevered and temporarily relocated his team members outside Sudan until the internet was restored.

Before he left for Canada, Mujtaba ran a distribution/logistics in Sudan. After an unsuccessful attempt at building a wireless earpiece in Canada, he decided to look back home and solve the problem of access to healthcare in Sudan.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of young Africans living in the diaspora choose to leave their “comforts” in the West to return to Africa. Despite the appeal of emigration, many Africans choose to stay back or return to contribute to the development of the continent.

At the 2022 Acumen West Africa Fellows gathering, a common theme was the shared desire to stay back and build Africa, a different mindset amid a wave of young people leaving the continent. The reason for this is the passion for Africa and an ardent belief that the work they do matters.
