Sirisia Member of Parliament John Waluke has sharply rebuked a group of young residents from Vihiga County during a public appearance with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
The confrontation unfolded under clear skies outside the parliamentary precinct, where a gaggle of Gen Z hecklers interrupted Wetang’ula’s address.
Their jeers prompted an unusually stern reaction from Waluke, who publicly demanded respect for parliamentary decorum and warned the youths against undermining democratic dialogue.
Waluke began by questioning the audacity of the hecklers. He posed a pointed challenge: who were they to jeer at senior lawmakers? He reminded them of a time when he and other leaders were young, asserting that they, too, once held similar convictions.
But, he emphasized, maturity brings understanding and with it, the expectation that one should express opinions responsibly and respectfully.
He went on to say that heckling did more harm than good. Such disruptions not only derail constructive discussions, but risk eroding the sanctity of democratic spaces.
According to Waluke, the very act of jeering while a Speaker speaks sends a message of disrespect not just to the person speaking, but to the institutional process itself. He reminded the youths that freedom of expression comes with the responsibility to listen as well as speak.
Waluke also placed some blame on parents and educators, urging them to instill values of decorum and critical thinking in their children.
He warned that society cannot flourish when its young voices are raised only in chaos and confrontation, rather than in informed, civic engagement.
He insisted that Kenya needs youth who contribute thought‑provoking ideas not ones fixated on ridicule or disruption.
The MP closed his remarks with a call to dialogue over disruption. He proposed that if youths wish to challenge decisions or question authority, they should channel their energy into community forums, public debates, or policy discussions.
That way, he argued, their voices could influence policy and society in meaningful ways rather than being dismissed as mere hecklers.
