“I am scared and afraid. I am so afraid in my heart. I had high hopes for my grandson. My expectations have been cut short. I cannot express how sad I am. I am very sad,” she said.
Ojwang’s grandma recounts last moments with grandson
Atieno painfully recounted the lovely moments she shared with Ojwang’, who left behind a three-year-old son.
She said her grandson was extremely kind and thoughtful, often expressing his care through random gifts and visits.
“He was very caring and loving. He would pop in many times without alerting anyone, bringing bread and milk. He even asked me many times to keep it between us, not to tell anyone else. He would bring me food and tell me to eat to my fill. He cared about me,” she recalled.
How did Ojwang spend his final days with his grandma?
Atieno added that Ojwang’ was concerned about her health and regularly checked in on her.
Whenever she needed medicine, he would make time to get it for her.
“Before his death, in his final days, he helped me. He was there for me. We were very close, and our bond was unique. He would bring me sugar and other items and ask me to keep it between us. I am deeply saddened by his death,” she said heartbreakingly.
Atieno, who noted that Ojwang’ was her only grandson, questioned the government regarding his death.
Abert Ojwang’s grandma’s request to government
She wondered if the government had anything to do with it as she demanded justice.
“I request the government to look at this neighbourhood. Ojwang’ was the keeper of the neighbourhood. Now he is no more—our helper. I ask the government to look at us and help us in the best way they can. Help us and get us justice. We have never seen anything like this before,” she cried.
As she walked alone in the home compound, Atieno sang a sorrowful traditional song for her grandson.
Her heart was broken, her dreams shattered, and her hope deferred, wondering what would become of her after Ojwang’s death.

Ojwang’s wife mourns slain blogger
In another story, Ojwang’s wife, Nevinina Onyango, mourned her late husband, recounting her last moments with him.
The single mother noted they had big plans together, having committed to one another just months before Ojwang’s death.
Meshack Opiyo, Ojwang’s father, said his son had introduced Nevinina to the family, and they were glad to welcome her.
