Wetangula Celebrates Kenyan ICT Talent After Global Victory in China

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has applauded 12 outstanding Kenyan university students for their stellar performance at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final 20242025, held from May 20 to 24 in Shenzhen, China.

Speaking during a recognition ceremony held at Parliament Buildings this week, organized in collaboration with Huawei, local universities, and government partners, Wetangula praised the young tech minds for flying Kenya’s flag high on the global stage. He hailed their success as a testament to the nation’s growing reputation in digital innovation and technological excellence.

“I warmly applaud our brilliant students for their resounding victory at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final,” said Wetangula. “Life is a continuous journey, and success is a constantly moving target.”

Wetangula urged the students to see their victory not as a final destination but as a stepping stone to even greater accomplishments. He challenged them to pursue leadership in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things, fields that are defining the future of innovation worldwide.

“Let this achievement be a stepping stone. Continue to push forward and leverage emerging fields to create practical solutions for Kenya and the world,” he added.

Kenya Bags Multiple Awards at Global Tech Competition

Kenya’s participation in the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final was nothing short of remarkable. The 12 students, selected from top institutions across the country, competed against some of the world’s brightest talents and emerged with four international awards, signaling Kenya’s rise as a force in global tech education.

A joint team from JKUAT and Machakos University clinched First Prize in the Computing Track, showcasing exceptional expertise in software development and digital systems.

Meanwhile, the Network Track saw a collaborative team from Machakos University, JKUAT, and the University of Nairobi win Second Prize, while JKUAT and Moi University students earned Second Prize in the Cloud Track for their proficiency in cloud computing and digital infrastructure.

In the Innovation Track, Egerton University’s “Silicon Savannah” team secured Third Prize for their Smart Air Quality Monitoring System, a cutting-edge solution that captures real-time environmental data to support healthier, smarter urban communities.

All-Girls Team Wins Women in Technology Award

This year’s competition also celebrated a major milestone in gender inclusion in STEM. Kenya fielded an all-girls team that won the prestigious Women in Technology Award, underscoring the country’s commitment to empowering women in the digital economy.

The team included Rukia Mwari (Telecommunication Engineering) and Banzy Nyaga (Mathematics and Computer Science) from JKUAT, alongside Beverlyne Ndombi and Ifrah Hussein, both Electrical and Communication Engineering students from Moi University.

Their innovative spirit and technical excellence earned international recognition, positioning them as role models for the next generation of women in tech.

“Girls are increasingly embracing ICT career paths, and this year’s female finalists are a testament to that. These are the future leaders of our digital economy,” said Stephen Zhang, Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya.

Building Kenya’s Digital Future

Kenya’s participation in the Huawei ICT Competition is part of a larger national effort to boost digital skills, foster innovation, and bridge the gap between academia and industry. Since the competition’s local launch, more than 12,000 Kenyan students have participated, with 50 reaching the global finals.

Many top performers have gone on to secure roles in the Huawei Management Trainee Program or within other major tech firms.
