Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially regained full control of the Jubilee Party after the High Court upheld the resolutions of the May 2023 National Delegates Conference (NDC) a decision that deals a major blow to the rival faction led by East African MP Kanini Kega, Sabina Chege and former MP Joshua Kuttuny.

The ruling delivered Thursday by Justice Asenath Nyaboke Ongeri validated the appointments of Saitoti Torome as the party’s National Chairman and Jeremiah Kioni as Secretary-General, cementing Uhuru’s grip on the party machinery.

“The May 2023 NDC was properly convened, and its resolutions remain binding and enforceable,” Justice Ongeri ruled.

The court dismissed earlier actions by the Kega faction including the suspension of Kioni and Vice-Chair David Murathe ruling that their controversial February 2023 NEC meeting was procedurally defective and that all decisions flowing from it were null and void.

The judge also quashed a Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) ruling that had favored the Kega faction, calling it erroneous and illegal.

This ruling comes just weeks after the Court of Appeal declined to block the High Court’s earlier validation of Uhuru’s leadership.

On November 19, 2024, Justices Jamila Mohammed, Mumbi Ngugi, and Fred Ochieng refused to grant a stay order sought by the rebel camp while awaiting a full hearing.

The internal battle for Jubilee’s control began in 2023 when a faction aligned with President William Ruto and led by Kanini Kega and Sabina Chege tried to oust Uhuru’s loyalists from key party positions.
