Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua delivered a fiery critique of Mount Kenya’s elected leaders, accusing them of betraying their own communities in favor of political loyalty to President William Ruto.
Speaking at a church service held on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at AIPCA Gatumbi Church in Lari Constituency, Kiambu County, Gachagua did not mince words. He condemned the region’s Members of Parliament for allowing themselves to be used as political tools, arguing that their blind allegiance to President Ruto has deepened the hardships facing the youth in Mount Kenya.
Gachagua highlighted a glaring contrast in opportunities offered to young people across regions. While President Ruto has allegedly facilitated meaningful jobs and scholarships for youth from his own community, youth from Mount Kenya are allegedly paid to incite violence and unrest.
Gachagua held the Mt Kenya MPs accountable for this injustice. He said they had failed their constituents by enabling a cycle of poverty and hopelessness among the youth.
“Nyinyi wabunge, huyu Ruto vijana wa jamii yake anawapeleka Australia, wengine jeshi, wengine KRA. Vijana yetu anawapatia pesa muwapatie watupe mawe. Nyinyi ni wajinga kiasi gani, how foolish are you?” he blasted.
Loosely translates to: (You, the MPs, Ruto sends young people from his own community to Australia, others to the military, others to the Kenya Revenue Authority. But for our youth, he gives you money to give to the youth to throw stones. How foolish are you?)
Gachagua Warns Mount Kenya MPs
Gachagua went on to accuse President Ruto of mocking these MPs behind their backs, despite using them for his political gains.
The DCP leader stressed that these MPs act on orders from State House, ignoring the needs of their communities. Their blind loyalty, he said, has stolen the dignity and future of the region’s youth.
Warning the MPs about their legacy, Gachagua said history would not remember them as champions of their people but rather as symbols of betrayal.
“When the history of this region is written, the MPs from this community will have a whole chapter as the most foolish leaders ever elected in the Mt Kenya region,” he declared.
He also criticized the MPs for unquestioningly endorsing every directive from President Ruto, no matter the cost to their constituents.
“William Ruto akiwaambia kwendeni mpitishe Finance Bill mnaenda, mnapitisha. Akiwaambia ni mbaya, mnasema ‘Yes, Sir’. Akiwaambia endeni mfukuze Deputy President mnaenda mnafukuza. You are an embarrassment to the people of this region,” Gachagua fired.
(When William Ruto tells you to go and pass the Finance Bill, you go and pass it. If he says it’s bad, you say ‘Yes, Sir.’ When he tells you to go and dismiss the Deputy President, you go and dismiss him.)
Closing his remarks, he warned that the people of Mount Kenya were watching and would eventually hold their leaders accountable for putting personal gain above the community’s wellbeing.
