When given the chance to speak at the funeral, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah furiously criticized Governor George Natembeya for his remarks. Ichung’wah openly told Natembeya, “Shame on you,” accusing him of engaging in petty politics during such a solemn occasion.
He went on to call out Natembeya for his alleged hypocrisy, pointing to the governor’s silence during his time as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government. Ichung’wah claimed that during Natembeya’s tenure, several bodies were found in Kerio Valley, yet he took no action. He further accused him of forcefully evicting people from the Mau Forest during that period, leaving many displaced and suffering.
The Majority Leader argued that it was unfair for Natembeya to criticize the current administration while ignoring issues that happened under his watch in the past. His remarks stirred mixed reactions among the mourners, with some supporting him while others remained silent.
Ichung’wah’s strong words highlighted the political divide between leaders at the event. The exchange added tension to the funeral, which had already been marked by earlier disruptions. Despite the drama, the event eventually proceeded with tributes to the late Mama Wetang’ula.
