Young Lady Explains Why She Ended Up In Prison After Breaking Up With Her Husband

Caroline Wanjiru, a resident of Muranga, shares a story of her personal journey, providing insights into the realities of prison life and the invaluable lessons she learned from her experiences. She became a mother to four children at a young age. Her family moved from Muranga to Nairobi when she was in class six.

After completing class eight, she enrolled in a tailoring course, but her studies were abruptly halted when her teacher attempted to assault her. Subsequently, she married a man she loved, and they were blessed with two children, but sadly, their marriage eventually fell apart.

To make ends meet, she found work as a cashier and waitress in clubs. During this time, she entered into a relationship with another man, unaware that she was already pregnant. While working at a specific club, she unexpectedly encountered financial losses that amounted to Ksh 105, 000 within just nine days, despite her exceptional performance in her role.

Puzzled by the cause of these losses, Caroline agreed to repay the sum gradually, unaware that her boss had ulterior motives. Consequently, her boss reported the matter to the police, resulting in Caroline’ s arrest. It was in prison that she discovered she was pregnant, which came as a shocking surprise. Filled with a sense of worthlessness for finding herself in such a situation, she felt powerless to change her circumstances.

Life in remand proved to be immensely challenging for Caroline, as she had not yet been convicted. Despite her parents’ efforts to negotiate with the complainant and settle the losses, their attempts were repeatedly rejected. Eventually, Caroline gave birth to a baby boy, yet the constant presence of police monitoring her every move, even in the labor ward, deprived her of any personal space. Nonetheless, she found solace in accepting her circumstances.

Fortunately, three weeks after giving birth, Caroline’ s case was brought before a judge who, with compassion, decided to release her due to insufficient evidence to support the theft accusation against her boss. She reunited with her parents in a state of great joy and relief, Caroline initially resided with them before eventually renting a house and embarking on a fresh start. Currently, she earns a living by washing clothes, appreciating the freedom she now possesses.
