For the 2022 KCSE candidate it may be confusing coming across these relatively new terms. Today I want to differentiate the two and also show you how you can calculate your weighted cluster points.
So, to start us off, what are cut-off points and how important are they? Cut off points are basically the cluster points applied to a specific institution during a competitive placement. This means that, for example if 1000 students apply to join University of Nairobi for Bachelor of medicine and surgery yet the university has let’s assume only 200 vacancies, then competitive placement will be done using cluster points and the cluster points of the 200th student will now be the cut off points for the university that year.
Calculating your weighted cluster points can be tricky but I’ll try my best to take you through the entire process. If you have any query you can ask in the comments and I’ll answer you as soon as I can. For this example let’s take someone who wants to do bachelor of medicine and surgery. The cluster subjects for this course in most universities will be Mathematics,One language in which you performed best,Biology and Chemistry. You can substitute the four subjects for the ones your course requires.
The formula used is (C=[√ (r/R* t/T)]*48 ). Where ‘C’ represents the cluster points you want to calculate,’r’ represents the sum of the total points scored in the four cluster subjects for your course,’R’ represents the maximum possible points in the four subjects which will be 48,’t’ is the total points you scored overall in all subjects and ‘T’ is the maximum possible overall points you can score in all the subjects which will be 84 for our case. The other part of the calculations requires a calculator and remember to be Keen on the brackets since the equation involves brackets. Also don’t forget the square root comes later i.e (r/R*t/T) then calculate the square root before multiplying by 48. The answer you will get is now your average cluster points.
