MTN Ghana has committed US$2 million to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations to support the Government of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme.
The funding is intended to support the training of one million Ghanaians in coding and digital skills, with a focus on equipping young people to participate in the digital economy.
The commitment follows engagements between MTN Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita and MTN executives for Ghana, Southern and East Africa, including Ebenezer Asante and Stephen Blewett, and the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations during the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last year. The discussions focused on collaboration between the public and private sectors in building digital skills capacity.
Speaking on the contribution, Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, said the support was aimed at strengthening youth participation in the digital economy through skills development.
The One Million Coders Programme, led by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, forms part of the government’s digitalisation agenda. The programme seeks to expand access to coding and software development skills to support public-sector modernisation, private-sector growth, entrepreneurship and job creation.
MTN Ghana said its support for the programme aligns with MTN Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) focus on digital inclusion, education and youth development.
Beyond the contribution, the company said it is working with the Government of Ghana on the establishment of a US$25 million ICT Centre to support innovation, skills training and digital collaboration.
The MTN Ghana Foundation also continues to support digital education initiatives, including the Ministry’s Girls in ICT programme.
