Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has criticised former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, over comments he recently made about the party.

According to Blay, Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks are damaging to the image of the NPP and undermine the principles of internal party democracy.

He stressed that while democracy allows freedom of expression, party members must exercise due diligence and responsibility when making public comments that affect the party.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on January 27, 2026, Freddie Blay described the comments as reckless and irresponsible.

‘There is no way an economist can develop Ghana’ – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

“Anybody who talks like that is talking irresponsibly, especially when he claims to be a member of the party. It is reckless when you talk like that. It is democracy that has suffered,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said during the interview.

He added that democracy does not mean endorsing harmful or baseless statements simply because they are made in the name of free speech.

“When you say you are going by democracy, you allow people to say what they want, and then you defend them with your life, even when they are talking foolishly, you take it like that,” Blay stated.

It be recalled that, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, recently stated that the opposition NPP has two branches, one he calls “fake” and the other “real.”

According to him, he no longer considers himself part of the “fake” NPP.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on January 12, 2026, Professor Frimpong-Boateng said the party’s current way of handling affairs is tantamount to corruption.

He cited the last NPP presidential primaries, which elected a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2024 general elections, as an example.

He made several allegations about the process, which he claims were inappropriate.

Don’t allow prophetic conspiracy to stir chaos in NPP presidential primaries – Kwaku Gyasi

“The present NPP is not the NPP I used to know. It’s fake. What I see now is not the party I knew,” he said.

When asked if he still considers himself part of the party, he responded, “Not the fake one. The real one is there it’s virtual and the members are there in the background.”

He further explained, “Look at how they elected their last flagbearer. They twisted the arms of the weak… bribed delegates and intimidated others to secure the flagbearer. This was for the 2024 election. This is the beginning of corruption and it should not be allowed in any serious situation or in any serious party.

“And there were issues we lost the elections badly and we did not address the problems that led to the losses.”
