Dafeamekpor exposes 56 bills passed under certificates of urgency during Afenyo-Markin era Dafeamekpor exposes 56 bills passed under certificates of urgency during Afenyo-Markin era

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, over his claim that the Majority Caucus was abusing the certificate of urgency procedure to push legislation through Parliament without adequate debate.

Speaking at the Minority Caucus’s ‘Holding Government to Account’ press briefing at Parliament on Monday, January 26, 2026, Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, said the Majority Caucus had passed several laws without proper debate, vowing that it would not be repeated in the upcoming sitting of the House.

“The Majority has turned Parliament into a rubber-stamp parliament… They should be ready to face us in the chamber. We will resist with all the energy we have. There will be no more certificates of urgency without justification,” he said.

Reacting to this in a post shared via X on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, suggested that the Minority Leader’s criticism was hypocritical.

He said that Afenyo-Markin, when he was the Majority Leader, had led the passage of 56 bills under certificates of urgency.

“After listening to Hon. Afenyo-Markin earlier today, I decided to cross-check some facts from the Hansard Department of Parliament.

“The facts will shock you. Hon. Afenyo-Markin led his NPP government in Parliament to enact as many as 56 statutes under a CERTIFICATE OF URGENCY. Not 3. Not 4. Not 5. Fifty-six,” he wrote.

He went on to share a supposed list of the statutes passed under Afenyo-Markin.
