The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has attributed the rise in road accidents recorded in 2025 mainly to reckless driving and excessive speeding, rather than poor road infrastructure.
His remarks follow provisional data released by the authority, which indicate that a total of 2,949 lives were lost in 14,743 road traffic crashes across the country between January and December 2025.
This figure represents a notable increase compared to fatalities recorded in 2024.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, January 25, Amaliba emphasised that road safety remains a shared responsibility, with drivers playing the most critical role in preventing crashes.
According to him, while Ghana continues to grapple with poor road conditions in some areas, responsible driving habits could have significantly reduced the number of accidents recorded during the year.
“So, over-speeding, which is the doing of the driver, is what contributes to most of the accidents and road crashes on our roads.
“The others could be a factor, but if you are careful and you simply abide by the limits, even with poor roads, we still could have reduced the numbers,” he stated.
Amaliba further linked the rise in road accidents to the limited implementation of the Stay Alive Campaign in 2025.
He explained that funding constraints following the restructuring of the Road Fund affected the authority’s ability to carry out extensive public education and outreach programmes.
He, however, expressed optimism that road safety initiatives would regain momentum with the establishment of the Road Maintenance Fund, adding that promised funding would enable the NRSA to fully resume nationwide safety campaigns aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives.
