The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced a series of welfare and infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of personnel and their families, including a housing regeneration project, a Trust Fund for dependents of fallen soldiers, and a special needs school.
Speaking at the 2025 General Headquarters End-of-Year West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) at Burma Camp on Friday, January 23, Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong said the initiatives reflect the Armed Forces’ resolve to take proactive steps to address welfare and logistical challenges.
“We are not sitting aloof. On our own, as an Armed Force, we are leveraging on our goodwill, expertise, and strategic relationships to do more for ourselves,” he stated.
He disclosed that the military is expanding self-sustaining ventures, including travel and tour services, bakery operations, block making, kenkey production, poultry and crop farming, to generate internal resources.
“These will accrue some resources for the system to use to support our logistics challenges,” he said.
The Chief of the Defence Staff also announced a major barracks regeneration strategy that will transform housing at Burma Camp into high-rise structures to conserve land.
“We have undertaken a barracks regeneration strategy that will see the modernization of Burma Camp housing units to high-rise buildings to save more than half of the existing land space,” he explained.
According to him, construction of 200 housing units of Burma Camp will begin after a self-help fundraising event scheduled for April 2026.
He further revealed plans to establish a Ghana Armed Forces Trust Fund to support families of personnel who die in active service.
“With your contribution of a seed money, in March this year we will commence the implementation of Ghana Armed Forces Trust Fund to cater for the dependents of serving personnel who falls in harm’s way whilst in service,” he announced.
