The government has announced a significant upward revision of the quarterly adjudication allowance for traditional authorities.
Effective April 1, 2026, the allocation will rise from GH¢30,000 to GH¢50,000, representing a 66.7% increase aimed at expediting the resolution of chieftaincy disputes across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, during a familiarisation visit to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho.
The minister noted that this financial boost is a key pillar of President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” designed to stabilise communities by empowering chiefs to act as effective mediators in local conflicts.
Addressing chiefs in the region on Friday, January 23, the minister emphasised that the role of traditional leaders has evolved beyond cultural custodianship to include critical judicial and developmental functions.
He acknowledged that inadequate funding has historically hampered the ability of the various Houses of Chiefs to hold regular sittings, leading to a backlog of chieftaincy cases that often threaten national security.
“The government remains fully committed to strengthening the capacity of the Regional Houses of Chiefs,” the Minister assured the gathered chiefs and queen mothers.
He further disclosed that this adjustment is part of a broader fiscal package that includes a 300% increment in monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs (now GH¢3,000) and Queen Mothers (now GH¢2,400), ensuring that traditional rulers are adequately resourced to maintain peace and stability.
Beyond judicial funding, the minister briefed the House on the government’s flagship 24-Hour Model Market initiative, a key component of the NDC’s 24-hour economy strategy.
The programme aims to construct modern, fully integrated commercial hubs that operate around the clock in three eight-hour shifts to boost local commerce and youth employment.
He called for a strategic partnership between Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and traditional leaders to bring this vision to life.
He specifically appealed to the chiefs to facilitate the initiative by making suitable land available for the construction of these market facilities.
In a vote of thanks, Togbe Agama Amata VI, the Paramount Chief of the Fievie Traditional Area, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention.
He described the allowance increment as a timely relief that would restore the dignity and functionality of the judicial committees.
Togbe Amata VI took the opportunity to commend the current administration for its tangible development projects in the region, specifically highlighting the Eastern Corridor Road as a testament to the party’s “Big Push” infrastructure agenda.
“The ongoing works along the Eastern Corridor Road are a major example of the party’s ‘Big Push’ infrastructure agenda,” the Paramount Chief remarked, noting that the improved connectivity is already stimulating economic growth within the Fievie Traditional Area and the wider Volta Region.
