Following numerous calls by some party stakeholders for Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, to be considered as the party’s candidate for the upcoming contest, a new update has emerged.

In a statement issued on January 22, 2026, Hajia Amina Adam announced her decision to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat.

According to Hajia Adam, her decision to step into the shoes of her late husband as the Ayawaso East MP was influenced by the numerous calls from party grassroots members and other stakeholders.

“There has been a clarion call from many quarters in my constituency and beyond for me to step into the shoes of my late husband, who served the Ayawaso East Constituency with distinction.

Ayawaso East by-election: Calls grow within NDC for the late MP’s widow to contest

“I have pondered over the calls from well-meaning members of the constituency, especially the elders and grassroots, and in so doing, I accept the call to serve my people,” she said.

She added that although the decision comes at a difficult time, she is heeding the counsel of her community, including chiefs, imams, and youth leaders.

“I want to assure them that I will not disappoint them,” Hajia Adam stated.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has scheduled February 7, 2026, for its parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the by-election.

The party also announced that nomination forms will cost GH¢50,000, while the filing fee has been pegged at GH¢40,000.

Additionally, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the by-election will take place on March 3, 2026.

The EC noted that the decision is in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.
