The Bureau of Ghana Languages has officially endorsed the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in educational institutions across Ahanta land, marking a major step toward the formal study and examination of the language at the basic and senior high school levels.

The endorsement was contained in a letter dated January 15, 2026, addressed to the Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, Mavis Kuukua Bissue.

The Bureau said the decision followed a comprehensive review of a paper submitted on the Ahanta Language Orthography and an assessment of the work of the Ahanta Language Project Committee.

According to the Bureau, a three-member team was constituted to evaluate the development and implementation of the orthography.

The team, together with officials from the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and coordinators of the pilot Ahanta language teaching programme, undertook field visits to schools participating in the pilot project.

During the visits, the team interacted with teachers, learners, parents, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, church leaders and elders to verify the usage, effectiveness and acceptance of the orthography in the classroom setting.

The Bureau noted that the findings from the assessment were overwhelmingly positive. It said the Ahanta Language Orthography meets the required standards, while the pilot programme has produced encouraging results.

Teachers, learners and parents were reported to be enthusiastic about the formal teaching and learning of the indigenous language, with traditional leaders expressing strong interest in seeing Ahanta taught widely across Ahanta land.

“In the light of these findings, we officially endorse the use of the Ahanta Language Orthography in schools on Ahanta land and for the development of learning materials,” the Bureau stated.

The endorsement, according to the Bureau, is a critical milestone towards making the Ahanta language examinable at both the Basic Education and Senior High School levels.

It also indicated its readiness to certify textbooks and other instructional materials developed using the approved orthography for educational purposes.
