The Akuapem South Municipal Assembly has confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the unauthorised felling of trees at the Aburi Botanical Gardens.
In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the Assembly said the suspects—identified as the curator of the gardens and one other person—are currently in police custody following investigations launched in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service.
The Assembly noted that the arrests followed widespread media reports about the incident, which involved the cutting down of trees at the Aburi Botanical Gardens, a nationally recognised heritage and tourism site.
According to the statement, comprehensive investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, and those found culpable will face the full rigours of the law.
The Akuapem South Municipal Assembly described the Aburi Botanical Gardens as a treasured ecological and tourism asset that must be protected for both present and future generations, stressing its commitment to ensuring justice and preventing a recurrence of such incidents.
A technical team has also been deployed to assess the extent of damage caused, while a restoration plan will be developed in consultation with the Department of Parks and Gardens in Accra.
The Assembly urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference, encouraging anyone with credible information to contact the Assembly or the Aburi Police Station. It added that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
