Like him or not, Chief Nyesom Wike has rewritten the rules of Nigerian politics in ways that deserve serious attention.

His political style may be controversial, his decisions may attract criticism, and his methods may not always conform to conventional political expectations. Yet, beneath the controversy lies an undeniable reality: Chief Wike has demonstrated an unusual ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political environment, build alliances across political divides, and pursue what he considers to be the broader interest of the country.

What is particularly striking is his ability to bring together political interests from different parties and backgrounds under a common objective. The emerging Rainbow Coalition is a clear demonstration of this new approach to political engagement.

A new approach to political alliances

Nigerian politics has traditionally been defined by strong party divisions. Politicians who disagree with their parties often cross over to another political platform.

Chief Wike has demonstrated that there can be another way.

Rather than allowing party differences to completely prevent political cooperation, he has shown that politicians with different political identities can find common ground where their interests and objectives converge.

His experience following the 2023 PDP presidential primaries, the emergence of the G5 Governors, and his subsequent relationship with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu all form part of this unusual political journey.

Today, Chief Wike remains an important political figure within the broader PDP family while serving as a minister in an APC-led federal administration.

That alone demonstrates how dramatically the traditional boundaries of Nigerian political engagement are changing.

From Rivers to Abuja

Chief Wike’s influence, however, is not limited to political strategy.

His appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory places him in charge of one of the most important administrative responsibilities in Nigeria.

As a politician from the Niger Delta, his appointment also demonstrated that the administration of the nation’s capital is open to Nigerians from every part of the country.

But Chief Wike entered Abuja with a reputation already established.

During his tenure as Governor of Rivers State, he became widely associated with the description “Mr. Project”, reflecting his strong emphasis on physical development and infrastructure.

In the Federal Capital Territory, he has brought that same project-driven approach to governance.

Building of roads, flyovers, district infrastructure, urban renewal, the restoration of the Abuja Master Plan, transportation, security, and revenue generation have featured prominently in his administration.

The rehabilitation and commissioning of the Abuja Light Rail was particularly significant, providing an important transportation alternative for residents of the capital.

His administration has also pursued the recovery of outstanding ground rents from individuals and corporate organisations, seeking to strengthen the revenue base of the FCT and provide additional resources for development.

Whether one agrees with his administrative style or not, Chief Wike has demonstrated a strong preference for visible projects, deadlines, execution, and measurable outcomes.

The Rainbow Coalition

Perhaps the most interesting part of Chief Wike’s current political journey is his role in the formation of the Rainbow Coalition.

The coalition brings together political interests that would traditionally be viewed as belonging to different sides of Nigeria’s political divide.

That requires political negotiation, it requires patience, it requires the ability to identify areas of common interest, and, perhaps most importantly, it requires the courage to pursue an unconventional political path.

For his supporters, Chief Wike’s ability to bring different political interests together demonstrates strategic thinking and political maturity.

For his critics, his approach may be viewed differently. But politics is ultimately judged by outcomes.

The significance of the Rainbow Coalition, therefore, lies not merely in the personalities involved, but in the possibility of creating a broader platform where political actors can work together around shared objectives.

Beyond party politics

Chief Wike’s political journey has demonstrated that party membership alone does not determine political influence; relationships matter.Performance matters.Negotiation counts, grassroots structures matter.

And the ability to build bridges across political divides matters.

This is perhaps the most important lesson from his political career.

He has shown that political actors do not necessarily have to agree on everything before they can work together on something that serves a common interest.

In a country as diverse as Nigeria, where political, ethnic, regional, and ideological differences can easily create divisions, the ability to build bridges should not be dismissed.

Rewriting the rules

The story of Nyesom Wike is, therefore, bigger than one politician, one political party, or one election.
It is about a changing political environment, it is about challenging old assumptions. It is about demonstrating that political alliances can be built across traditional boundaries when there is a shared objective.

Whether history ultimately remembers Chief Wike primarily as a strategist, a negotiator, a development focused administrator, or a coalition builder, his influence on Nigeria’s contemporary political landscape is already significant.

Like him or not, Chief Wike is rewriting the rules.

And if those new rules can produce greater cooperation, stronger political engagement, improved development, and a greater sense of common purpose, then the ultimate question should not simply be who benefits politically.

The bigger question should be: Can this Chief Nyesom Wike’s new approach serve the common good of Nigeria?

The obvious answer is yes because the new approach enables the electorates, the common man, and woman to assess their representatives or leaders based on evidence performance.

The score card can be presented to the masses to see and judge. Visible projects and policies with positive economic impacts on the masses can be presented rather than an amorphous party standing or belonging.
