Residents stranded, cars submerged as flash flood hits parts of Abuja

Residents and motorists were stranded on Saturday after
heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding in parts of Abuja, the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT).

The downpour left parts of Wuse 2, including Adetokunbo
Ademola Crescent, as well as the area around Delight Event Centre in Gudu and
Efab Estate in Lokogoma, heavily flooded.

The bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi was also heavily
flooded, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting movement.

Some vehicles were submerged or damaged by the floodwaters,
while businesses in affected areas were forced to close.

A video shared by a resident showed floodwaters covering the
Ebeano-Gudu road and the bridge connecting the two areas.

“Dear Honourable Minister of the FCT, please come to our
rescue. This is the current situation of Ebeano/Gudu Road. The bridge is
flooded,” the resident said in the video.

“People coming from Gudu junction can’t cross, people coming
from Ebeano can’t get to Gudu. Mr Project, please come and help us.”

The flooding comes following warnings by the Nigeria
Meteorological Agency (NiMet) about the risk of flooding during the 2026 rainy
season.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) had also
warned that flooding could worsen between August and September.

The FCT was among areas identified as having high flood
risk, with the Annual Flood Outlook also highlighting Abuja as vulnerable to
flash flooding.

The federal government has also urged Nigerians to prepare
for flooding, warning that climate change is increasing the frequency and
intensity of heavy rainfall, which can overwhelm drainage infrastructure.

The latest flooding has renewed concerns about the adequacy
of drainage infrastructure and flood preparedness in Abuja as the rainy season
enters its peak period.
