Accra, Aug. 13, GNA – The death toll in the multiple-vehicle crash on the Pokuase-Achimota stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway has risen to 12, with at least 22 others injured.

The crash occurred at about 0500 hours on Thursday and involved seven vehicles and a tricycle (Aboboyaa).

The vehicles included two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, a Suzuki S‑Presso and the tricycle.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bawa Abubakari, officer in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Mile 7, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency at the scene.

He said 19 of the injured were receiving treatment at the Ga North Municipal Hospital, while three others were at the Achimota Hospital.

ASP Abubakari added that doctors at the Ga North Municipal Hospital had recommended the transfer of three casualties to the Police Hospital for further treatment, with arrangements underway for an ambulance.

He said police officers were visiting hospitals to ascertain the condition of the injured as investigations continued.

“We don’t want to jump into conclusions now,” he said when asked about preliminary findings into the cause of the crash.

ASP Abubakari said the vehicles involved had been towed to the police motor traffic yard for further investigations.

The identities of the deceased had not yet been established, although some relatives had reported at the scene seeking information.

ASP Abubakari expressed concern about speeding on the Pokuase‑Achimota stretch, particularly among motorists travelling from Pokuase towards Achimota.

“If you know you are already in the city, especially from Pokuase, how come you are speeding as if you are on the motorway?” he asked.

ASP Abubakari recalled similar crashes on the stretch, noting that speeding often made it difficult for emergency responders to safely attend to victims.

“Just a few seconds of patience can save you,” he said, urging motorists to drive cautiously and observe safe speeds.

The crash caused significant traffic disruption, but ASP Abubakari said the road had since been cleared after the damaged vehicles, including the heavy trucks, were towed away.
