In Ghana, the Ghana Muslim Forum for Peace and Unity has condemned Isaac Owusu Bempah, founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, over his remarks about former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. As MyJoyOnline reports, the organization considers these statements unfounded and harmful to the country’s interfaith unity.

Statements during a church service

A press release dated September 10 and signed by the forum’s executive secretary, Zakari Abdul Rahman, refers to comments made by Owusu Bempah during a church service on September 6. According to the forum, the religious figure threatened to spiritually end Bawumia’s political career if people he called Bawumia’s communicators did not stop responding to him.

The organization also said that Owusu Bempah accused Bawumia and the Nasara wing of the New Patriotic Party of planning to attack his church.

The forum’s position

The forum recalled a statement made by Owusu Bempah on August 9. According to the organization, he then said that he would curse everyone who voted for the New Patriotic Party and also stated that Bawumia would never become Ghana’s president because a Muslim should not lead a country with a Christian majority.

Forum representatives said that Christians and Muslims in Ghana have lived together for decades, married one another, worked, and jointly contributed to the country’s development. They also noted that Bawumia became the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate thanks to the support of party delegates, most of whom, according to the forum’s assessment, are Christians.

According to the organization, in the 2024 general election Bawumia received support from 42% of Ghanaian voters, most of whom were Christians. The forum urged Bawumia to remain calm and continue demonstrating respect for diversity and interfaith dialogue.
