Ghanaian musician Eric Kwadwo Takyi, popularly known as Takyi Kay, is carving a niche for himself by blending the country’s traditional highlife heritage with contemporary African sounds.
The singer, songwriter and performer from Adwumakase-Kese in the Ashanti Region comes from a strong musical background. He is the grandson of legendary highlife musician Alex Konadu, popularly known as “One Man Thousand.”
Inspired by his grandfather’s legacy, Takyi Kay developed an interest in music at an early age and has since sought to preserve the authentic highlife sound while introducing contemporary elements that resonate with younger audiences.
He attended Aduman Senior High School, where he further nurtured his passion for music before combining his artistic pursuits with public service.
Over the years, Takyi Kay has gained valuable experience performing and working with some of Ghana’s established musicians. He has served as both a backing and lead vocalist for highlife icons including Nana Acheampong, the late Yaw Sarpong, the late Nana Tuffour and the late Daddy Lumba.
He credits these experiences with helping him sharpen his vocal abilities, stagecraft and understanding of the music business.
One of the notable moments in his career came during the KABFAM Legends Night 2023, where he performed alongside Nana Acheampong and the late Daddy Lumba.
The event later became particularly significant in Ghanaian music history as the final public performance featuring Nana Acheampong and Daddy Lumba together, giving Takyi Kay a place in a memorable chapter of the country’s highlife tradition.
His profile has also grown through collaborations with established artistes. He featured on Nana Acheampong’s song, “Basaa,” showcasing his vocal versatility and ability to work across different musical styles.
While remaining rooted in highlife, Takyi Kay has increasingly explored contemporary sounds in a bid to reach a broader audience.
He released the street-oriented anthem “Kenken Kwa” before following it with the inspirational single “Free Your Mind,” featuring award-winning musician King Paluta.
The collaboration highlighted his ability to combine elements of traditional highlife with contemporary Ghanaian music.
Takyi Kay is set to release another collaboration with King Paluta, titled “Fa Ma Me,” on August 14, 2026.
The Afrobeat-inspired song is expected to promote themes of love, unity and togetherness while reflecting his continued effort to explore modern sounds without losing connection to his Ghanaian roots.
Takyi Kay says his music is inspired by everyday experiences, love, resilience, hope and Ghana’s cultural values.
His musical approach seeks to appeal to audiences across generations by connecting lovers of traditional highlife with younger listeners seeking fresh and authentic Ghanaian sounds.
