The Ministry of Health has denied reports of a shortage of antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) in Ghana, saying the medicines are available at designated health facilities across the country.

The Ministry said it was also restocking medical commodities at the Medical Stores to maintain the supply and distribution of medicines to health facilities.

In a statement issued on August, 11, 2026, the Ministry said it had taken note of a statement by the Network of Persons Living with HIV in Ghana (NAP+ Ghana) alleging shortages of ARVs.

The Ministry said the claim that antiretroviral medicines were unavailable was inaccurate.

“ARVs are available at designated health facilities across Ghana to support the continued treatment and care of persons living with HIV,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry said the restocking formed part of its routine procurement and supply of medical commodities, adding that steps were being taken to meet its procurement obligations.

It said the measures were intended to maintain the availability and timely distribution of medicines and other health commodities to health facilities across the country.

The Ministry also rejected claims that antiretroviral medicines had expired at the port.

“The Ministry wishes to clarify that it is incorrect to suggest that antiretroviral medicines have expired at the port,” it said.

According to the Ministry, it continues to work with relevant stakeholders to manage and clear medical commodities in a timely manner.

The Ministry said it had also engaged NAP+ Ghana and told the organisation it was willing to address concerns about the availability and distribution of ARVs.

It said it would continue working with stakeholders to ensure that persons living with HIV had uninterrupted access to the medicines and services they require.

The Ministry also assured the public, particularly persons living with HIV, that steps were being taken to maintain the availability and distribution of antiretroviral medicines across the country.

The statement follows concerns raised by NAP+ Ghana, which says people living with HIV have reported shortages of some antiretroviral medicines.

The organisation’s concerns relate to access to medicines at health facilities, rather than whether ARVs exist elsewhere within the national supply system.

The Ministry’s statement did not provide specific stock figures or indicate the stock levels at individual health facilities.

The Ministry’s position is that ARVs remain available at designated facilities while steps are being taken to restock medical stores.
