South Africa delivered a comprehensive all-round performance to defeat Zimbabwe by 48 runs in the tri-series final at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek, despite missing several key players due to injuries.
After winning the toss, South Africa captain Bjorn Fortuin chose to bat first. The team posted a competitive total of 205 for 5. Openers Connor Esterhuizen and Jordan Hermann provided an explosive start following the withdrawal of Lhuandre Pretorius because of a niggle. Hermann led the innings with a blistering maiden T20 International half-century, reaching 50 runs in just 24 balls. South Africa reached 67 without loss at the end of the powerplay, as Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled to contain the attacking batsmen.

Zimbabwe gained their first wicket in the eighth over when Newman Nyamhuri dismissed Esterhuizen for 32, breaking an 84-run opening partnership. Hermann was soon dismissed by Brad Evans, caught superbly by Ryan Burl. Nevertheless, Dewald Brevis and Rubin Hermann continued to build South Africa’s innings, adding crucial runs in the middle overs. Brevis, who began the tournament with consecutive scores of 75, scored 32 before Evans dismissed him in the 17th over. Nyamhuri claimed Rubin Hermann’s wicket for 27 in the following over, but South Africa’s lower order contributed sufficiently to reach the final total.
For Zimbabwe, Brad Evans and Newman Nyamhuri both took two wickets each, while Blessing Muzarabani was the most economical bowler, conceding 25 runs in four overs.
Zimbabwe’s reply began poorly as Ben Curran was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Eathan Bosch. South Africa’s pace attack maintained pressure, with Bosch and Duan Jansen reducing Zimbabwe to four wickets for a low score inside the first five overs.
Captain Sikandar Raza was given a reprieve when caught off a no-ball, but Zimbabwe faced a formidable challenge, requiring 160 runs from 84 balls after the powerplay. South Africa’s spinners tightened their grip on the game, with Fortuin taking three key wickets, dismissing Ryan Burl, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Sikandar Raza, finishing with figures of 3 for 24.
Zimbabwe displayed resilience through Evans and Kundai Matigimu, who added 52 runs for the ninth wicket. Matigimu was dismissed by Kwena Maphaka, but Evans continued to resist, completing his maiden T20I half-century with a six.
Zimbabwe’s innings concluded in the 18th over. Eathan Bosch (2 for 22) and Duan Jansen (3 for 38) also played crucial roles as South Africa secured a convincing victory.
The tri-series, featuring the three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 co-hosts — South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia — showcased competitive cricket. Each team won at least one match. South Africa started the tournament with a defeat against Namibia but recovered by defeating Zimbabwe twice to reach the final. Zimbabwe remained competitive by beating Namibia to finish as runners-up.
The series provided valuable preparation ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, with the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek scheduled to host matches during the tournament.
