The Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa has made a significant stride in improving renal healthcare access by conducting 4,916 dialysis sessions for 268 patients since the establishment of its dialysis unit in 2022. This expansion has drastically reduced the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances to other parts of Ghana for life-saving treatment.

A Milestone in Renal Care: Commissioning of an Expanded Dialysis Unit

On Tuesday, August 4, the hospital officially commissioned an expanded dialysis facility, doubling its capacity from three to nine machines at an estimated cost of GH¢4 million. The upgrade was made possible through the collaboration of Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Upper West Regional Parliamentary Caucus, and Sustainable Health Education and Interventions Limited (SHEILD), a non-governmental organization.

From a Single Machine to a Fully Operational Unit

Initially, the hospital began dialysis services in 2022 with a single donated machine. Recognizing the growing demand, management procured two additional machines in 2023, but the surge in patient numbers necessitated further expansion. The recent addition of six new machines ensures that the facility can now accommodate more patients without delays.

Dr. Philip Baabineh, the Acting Medical Director of the Upper West Regional Hospital, highlighted the transformative impact of these services during the commissioning ceremony. He described each dialysis session not just as a medical procedure but as “another baby celebrated, another child returning to school, another parent returning home, and another family given hope.”

Despite the progress, Dr. Baabineh acknowledged that demand still exceeds the hospital’s capacity, making the expansion a critical milestone in restoring hope for patients and their families who rely on dialysis for survival.

Leadership, Collaboration, and Generosity Drive Healthcare Transformation

Professor Emmanuel K. Derbile, Vice-Chancellor of the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), praised the initiative as a testament to leadership, collaboration, and generosity in improving public health. He emphasized that the project marks “a new era of hope” for residents of the Upper West Region, bringing life-saving renal care closer to home while aligning with Ghana’s broader healthcare goals.

Prof. Derbile, who chaired the ceremony, also noted that the expanded facility will play a pivotal role in clinical training for medical students and healthcare professionals, particularly in collaboration with the UBIDS School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Addressing a Rising Public Health Crisis

Dr. Josephat Nyuzaghl, Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, underscored the urgency of the expansion, given the growing burden of kidney diseases in Ghana. He attributed the rise in cases to uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, and infections, which have turned kidney disease into a major public health concern.

The Upper West Regional Hospital remains the only facility in the region offering dialysis services, making the expansion particularly vital. Dr. Nyuzaghl called for the establishment of additional dialysis units at Nandom, Tumu, and Wa Municipal Hospitals to ensure equitable access to renal care across the region.

A Beacon of Hope for Patients and Families

The commissioning of the expanded dialysis unit is more than just an infrastructure upgrade—it represents a commitment to saving lives and reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with untreated kidney disease. With nearly 5,000 sessions completed since 2022, the facility has already made a profound difference in the lives of patients who would otherwise have faced prolonged suffering or premature death.

As the hospital continues to scale its services, the expanded capacity ensures that more individuals can receive the timely medical intervention they need, reinforcing Ghana’s efforts to strengthen regional healthcare infrastructure and improve public health outcomes.
