In Ghana, police inspector Hans Atubra was promoted to the rank of chief inspector after his actions during a fire in the town of Aboso in the Western Region. According to MyJoyOnline, the fire broke out on August 26, 2026, at Aboso’s main bus station.

Evacuation during the fire

The fire engulfed several shops, destroying property and posing a threat to people. Atubra, who served at the Tarkwa Divisional Police Headquarters, was reportedly the first police officer to arrive at the scene. He assisted people who were in the danger zone and evacuated them to safety.

Residents of Aboso lifted the police officer onto their shoulders and sang in his honor as a sign of gratitude. MyJoyOnline notes that this was their response to the risk he took while helping people during the fire.

Police recognition

Less than 24 hours later, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu promoted Atubra to the rank of chief inspector. The article states that the grounds were his courage, prompt response, and efforts to save lives and property.

The police officer was later also recognized at the National Police Headquarters in Accra. The outlet emphasizes the importance of professional and lawful police work, as well as citizens’ cooperation with law enforcement.
