The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has rescued 1,055 West African nationals, the majority of them Nigeriens, in an intelligence-led operation targeting organised human trafficking and street-begging networks across the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. Of those rescued, 662 were children, 248 were women, and 145 were men, in what stands as one of the largest single anti-trafficking interventions the country has recorded.
A Sweep Across Known Hotspots
The operation covered established begging hotspots in Greater Accra, including Abossey Okai, Sabon Zongo, Madina Zongo Junction, Madina, Ashaiman, and Tema, before extending into the Ashanti Region, where officers conducted parallel raids in Asawase, Alabar, Akwatia Line, Dagomba Line, Sabon Zongo, Airport Junction, and Aboabo in Kumasi .
Alongside the rescued nationals, several Ghanaian citizens suspected of acting as local agents facilitating the trafficking networks were also detained, as investigators work to map the wider structure of the syndicates operating behind them .
GIS said the scale of child involvement was especially alarming, noting that the significant number of minors rescued raised serious concerns about child vulnerability within these exploitative systems, and reflected a growing pattern of child trafficking for forced begging on Ghanaian streets.
A Birth in the Middle of a Rescue
Amid the enforcement exercise, a Nigerien woman apprehended in the sweep reported feeling unwell. The dedicated medical team assigned to the operation examined her and discovered she was in labour; she was transferred to a nearby medical facility, where she safely delivered a baby girl, and remained under medical observation and care afterward.
All rescued individuals were subsequently transferred to a designated holding facility as part of the Service’s standard humane-response protocol for large-scale interventions of this kind .
Part of a Sustained Campaign
This operation is not an isolated event but the latest in a sustained, nationwide GIS campaign against organised migrant street-begging networks. In a related exercise on April 15, 2026, in parts of Greater Accra including Abossey Okai, Zongo Junction, Nima, Madina, and Kaneshiethe Service facilitated the safe repatriation of 356 West African nationals to Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso.
A further operation in the Ashanti Region rounded up 606 individuals, comprising 381 children, 72 women, and 153 men, many of them believed to be trafficking victims. GIS also worked with the Nigerian High Commission in Accra to help 89 Nigerian nationals regularise their documentation and facilitated their handover to anti-trafficking authorities in Nigeria.
Ghana recorded more than 1,200 human trafficking victims rescued nationwide in 2025, according to the International Justice Mission (IJM), underscoring both the scale of the problem and the sustained pressure the GIS has placed on it going into 2026.
Balancing Enforcement with Free Movement
GIS has been careful to frame these operations as targeted enforcement against criminal exploitation rather than a challenge to regional mobility. The Service noted that its actions remain consistent with the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol, which guarantees ECOWAS citizens visa-free travel, residence, and establishment rights across member states, stressing that its interventions are aimed at criminal networks and irregularities, not at legitimate cross-border movement .
Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Basintale Amadu reaffirmed this balance, stating that the Service remains resolute in safeguarding Ghana’s borders and enforcing immigration law while upholding the country’s obligations under the ECOWAS Protocol, and committed to striking the right balance between regional integration and the protection of vulnerable persons.
A Call to the Public
Beyond enforcement, GIS used the operation to appeal directly to the Ghanaian public. Amadu urged citizens to refrain from giving alms directly to migrant beggars, particularly children, arguing that removing the financial incentive reduces the profitability of organised begging and discourages traffickers from exploiting vulnerable persons on the streets.
The Service instead encouraged the public to channel donations through the Department of Social Welfare and recognised child-protection and welfare organisations, rather than directly to individuals who may be under the control of exploitative networks.
A Pattern That Demands Regional
Attention
The scale of this operation over a thousand people rescued in a single coordinated sweep, two-thirds of them children reflects a trafficking economy that continues to exploit porous regional borders, economic desperation in parts of the Sahel, and the anonymity of Ghana’s urban commercial centres. It also demonstrates the value of sustained, intelligence-led enforcement paired with humane victim processing, from emergency medical care to coordination with diplomatic missions for eventual repatriation.
For families in Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso whose relatives have been swept into these networks, and for the children rescued from traffic intersections and market junctions across Accra and Kumasi, the operation offers a rare, tangible intervention against a trade that has proven remarkably persistent.
Whether the detained Ghanaian agents lead investigators further up the chain toward the financiers and organisers who profit most from this exploitation will determine whether this rescue becomes a turning point, or another chapter in a cycle that has already repeated itself twice this year.
Say NO to human trafficking.
