President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect as part of a wider shake-up of boards of several state-owned institutions.

The dissolution was announced by the Presidency on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as part of a wider decision to dissolve the boards of several state institutions.

The affected NSA board was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah and included NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, National Sports College representative Fuseini Bawa, Samuel Duku Sarfo of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh of the Ministry of Finance and Is-Haku Al-Hassan of the Ministry of Education.

Other members were Col. Richard Kofi Akoto, representing the Security Services Sports Association; Dr Luguterah Austin Wontepaga, representing tertiary institutions; Samson Deen of the National Paralympic Committee; Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Kofi Akpokavie; Hajia Sulemana Zenabu; Alhaji Idrisu Muntawalkilu Ahmed; Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong; Theresa Osahene; and Hamilton Kweku Nixon.

The board was sworn into office by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams on December 15, 2025, following Cabinet approval of the nominees under Section 4 of the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934). It was constituted to provide oversight of the NSA and drive reforms across Ghana’s sports administration.

During its relatively short tenure, the board outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at repositioning sports as an economic sector. Dr Awaah said the board wanted to increase the contribution of sports to Ghana’s economy while exploring new investment models, including mobile sporting infrastructure.

The board also pursued efforts to reduce the NSA’s dependence on government funding. In August, it established a five-member Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee, chaired by Samson Deen, to attract private-sector investment and develop sustainable funding streams for sports.

Only days before the dissolution, Dr Awaah had also raised serious concerns over the condition of the Accra Sports Stadium, describing the facility as a potential safety hazard following an inspection by the NSA, Ghana Sports Fund and government officials.

The Presidency has directed the relevant sector ministers to take the necessary steps to give effect to the dissolution. The affected boards, including that of the NSA, will be reconstituted in due course.

In the interim, management of the NSA is expected to continue handling the Authority’s day-to-day operations, although major policy, financial or contractual decisions requiring board approval will require prior authorisation from the appropriate authority.

The other institutions affected by the decision are Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG), Ghana Post Company Limited, Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
