Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced plans to wind down its operations in Nigeria after 12 years, with the exit taking effect on September 2, 2026.
The company said the decision followed a thorough review of its business operations in Nigeria.
Uber announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday, saying it had made the tough decision to wind down its operations in the country.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
Uber launched its ride-hailing service in Lagos in 2014 and said it had been privileged to be part of the daily lives of Nigerians by connecting passengers with independent transportation providers.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely,” the company said.
The e-hailing company acknowledged that its exit could disrupt the routines of passengers and driver-partners and apologised for the inconvenience.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” it said.
Although the core ride-hailing service ceased operations on September 2, Uber said its Help Centre would remain accessible to users until September 23, 2026.
The company said the extended access would allow customers and driver-partners to resolve final account queries and other administrative issues arising from the closure of its operations.
Uber thanked passengers and independent transportation providers across Nigeria for their patronage and support since it began operations in the country.
