The Ghana Premier League returns this weekend as the 2026/27 season kicks off on September 5. Eighteen clubs will battle for domestic supremacy, with defending champions Medeama SC aiming to retain their title while traditional giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak look to mount serious challenges.
The new campaign has already generated excitement, with clubs strengthening their squads, appointing new coaches and promoting young talents set to shine on Ghana’s biggest stage.
Medeama SC eye title defence
Defending champions Medeama SC have retained Head Coach Tanko Ibrahim, who guided the club to the Premier League title last season — his first league title as Head Coach and the club’s second championship after their historic triumph in 2022/23 under Augustine Evans Adotey.
The Yellow and Mauves have been among the most active clubs in the transfer market. Their notable additions include Heart of Lions midfielder Etse Dogli, Nations FC attacker Emmanuel Annor, Hohoe United captain Usman Safianu, Dreams FC right-back Ebenezer Adade, Karela United centre-back Abdul Rahman Yaya and Eleven Wonders midfielder Emmanuel Boateng.
Hearts of Oak rebuild under Kapor
Hearts of Oak have also been busy rebuilding. The Phobians have appointed Nebojša Kapor as Head Coach, tasked with guiding one of Ghana’s most successful clubs back to the top.
New arrivals include Abdul Aziz from Swedru All Blacks, midfielder Ebenezer Amoh, PAC Academy duo Rockson Kyeremeh and Manuel Osei Djan, Caleb Koranteng from Victory Club Warriors, Alex Banso from Nomoro FC, Prince Amevor, goalkeeper Vicente Anane, Ivorian forward Mamadou Kader Kourouma, Dominic Nsobila and experienced striker John Antwi from Dreams FC.
New era at Asante Kotoko under Tinkler
Asante Kotoko enter the season with South African coach Eric Tinkler at the helm. The Porcupine Warriors have revamped their squad with signings including goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, forward Emmanuel Mamah, Ivorian Koffi Marius Ange Bini, Isaac Opoku Agyemang, Burkinabe midfielder Abdoul Kader Tarnagda, Cameroonian Solomon Nsor Asaah from Fortuna de Mfou, Moroccan goalkeeper Abdel Wadie Mourad, defender Umar Ali from Partizani, Emmanuel Sanja from Vision FC, DR Congo centre-back Aristote Tamuzi, Ivorian winger Eric Gbetta and midfielder Richard Boadu Agadas.
Boadu takes charge at Aduana FC
Aduana FC have appointed Samuel Boadu to lead the club. The experienced tactician is expected to bring his winning mentality to Dormaa as Aduana push for honours. They have strengthened with Shawkan Hunalf Mohammed, Samuel Tenedu from Berekum Chelsea, Boa-At Regain and Emmanuel Abban from Bechem United, Stephen Amankona, Abdul Latif Mohammed from Victory Club Warriors, Zakaria Fuseini from Techiman Liberty Youth and left-back Bismark Anim.
Young Stars to watch
Beyond the big signings, the 2026/27 season offers a platform for Ghana’s next generation:
Etse Dogli (Medeama SC): Made his Premier League debut for Heart of Lions in 2025/26 after rising through Banana Inn FC. His maturity earned him a move to the champions.
Alex Banso (Hearts of Oak): Joined from Nomoro FC after impressing on loan at Ebony FC in the Division One League. His pace and attacking flair could be key for the Phobians.
David Lartey (Swedru All Blacks): The young left-back steps up from Dreams Chasers FC and will compete for a starting berth.
Meshack Adjetey Sowah (FC Samartex): Moved from Vision FC after attracting interest from several Premier League sides, including Hearts of Oak.
Zulka Massawudu (Berekum Chelsea): The former Young Apostles goalkeeper chose Chelsea after strong interest from other clubs.
Emmanuel Sanja (Asante Kotoko): The former Vision FC left-back now faces the challenge of life at one of Ghana’s biggest clubs.
