Lionel Messi has described his retirement from international football as “a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside” as the Argentina captain opened up on his emotional decision to end a 20-year career with the Albiceleste.

Messi confirmed his retirement in a heartfelt statement, revealing that he had been considering the decision since Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain.

“After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team,” Messi wrote.

The 39-year-old admitted that walking away from Argentina was difficult but believes the timing is right, particularly with a new generation of players emerging.

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment,” he said.

Messi insisted he leaves with no regrets, stressing that he always gave everything for the Argentina shirt, including during the difficult years before the team’s remarkable run of success.

“I swear I always gave everything, not only in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too,” he added.

His international career ultimately produced a World Cup, two Copa América titles, a Finalissima, Olympic gold and a FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Messi also reflected on the emotional bond he developed with Argentine supporters throughout his career, admitting he will miss experiencing their support from inside the team.

“Thank you for all the love during these 20 years. I’m going to miss hearing you from the inside. Now I’ll be one of you, always supporting from the outside,” he wrote.

He thanked his family, coaches, teammates and directors who accompanied him throughout his journey, describing his time with Argentina as both “beautiful” and “difficult.”

Messi revealed that he originally wrote the statement on July 21, two days after the World Cup final, but said recent events involving his father have strengthened his resolve to step away.

“I leave with peace and pride, knowing that together with my teammates we gave you moments we once dreamed of,” Messi said.

“Thank you God for making me Argentine. Vamos Argentina!”

Meanwhile, he’s expected to continue his club football career with Inter Miami this season.
