The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has engaged the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners as part of consultations to identify practical reforms to address challenges confronting the sector.

The engagement, held on Thursday, August 27, brought together members of the NPP’s Identifiable Groups Committee on the Extractive Sector,

The discussions focused on the challenges facing small-scale miners and measures to promote responsible mining while protecting the environment and safeguarding livelihoods.

In a post on Facebook, the former Vice President said the consultations also explored ways to create jobs and strengthen local value addition within the small-scale mining industry.

“We discussed the challenges facing small-scale mining and practical reforms to promote responsible mining, protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen local value addition,” he said.

Dr Bawumia stressed the importance of implementing practical and sustainable reforms that would enable small-scale mining to contribute more effectively to the economy while reducing its environmental impact.

The engagement forms part of the NPP’s broader consultations with stakeholders in the extractive sector. The party is seeking views and recommendations from industry players to inform possible policy interventions and reforms aimed at improving the sector.

Small-scale mining remains an important source of employment and livelihoods in Ghana, but the sector has also faced persistent concerns over environmental degradation, particularly illegal mining and its impact on water bodies and land.

The consultations are therefore expected to contribute to the NPP’s efforts to develop policies that balance the economic benefits of small-scale mining with environmental protection and responsible resource management.
