Kenya is marking Katiba Day today, August 27, a national observance dedicated to commemorating the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
The day was formally designated by President William Ruto through a presidential proclamation issued on August 25, 2025. It was first observed on August 27, 2025, and has been observed annually since.
Kenya marks Katiba Day to commemorate the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution and to reflect on the rights, reforms and governance principles it introduced. The day also provides an opportunity to renew the country’s commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and citizen participation in governance.
The Constitution followed a long period of advocacy for greater democracy, stronger checks on executive power, protection of rights and more equitable distribution of resources.
The reform push also followed periods of political tension and post-election violence, notably the 2007–2008 crisis.
Kenyans voted on the proposed Constitution in a national referendum held on August 4, 2010. Approximately 67 per cent of voters approved the draft.
It was formally promulgated on August 27, 2010, by then-President Mwai Kibaki at Uhuru Park in Nairobi during a public ceremony attended by regional leaders and large crowds.
The date is regarded as a defining moment in Kenya’s history and the beginning of the country’s “Second Republic” constitutional order.
Among the major changes introduced by the Constitution was a comprehensive Bill of Rights covering fundamental freedoms and socio-economic rights.
It also introduced devolution, creating 47 county governments with elected governors, assemblies and executives. The system was designed to bring governance closer to citizens and promote more equitable development.
The Constitution also strengthened independent institutions, including the Judiciary, electoral body and human rights commissions.
It introduced stronger separation of powers, placed limits on presidential authority and provided for public participation in governance.
Other provisions cover gender equity, environmental protection and land reforms.
The Constitution is frequently described as one of the more progressive constitutions of its time. It places emphasis on citizen-centred governance, the rule of law and national values including patriotism, human dignity, equity, social justice, inclusiveness and integrity.
The formal establishment of Katiba Day came 15 years after the Constitution was promulgated.
Under the presidential proclamation, the day is to be observed throughout Kenya and in all Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad.
Its purpose is to renew the country’s shared commitment to the ideals of the Constitution through dialogue on constitutionalism, governance and the rule of law.
The day also serves as a reminder of the collective duty of Kenyans to ‘obey, preserve, protect, and implement the Constitution.’
Katiba Day, however, is not a public holiday. It remains a normal working day.
Government institutions across the three arms of government and both levels of government, as well as schools, are required to organise and participate in civic activities aimed at promoting constitutional awareness and civic engagement.
Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad are similarly expected to organise commemorative activities for citizens in the diaspora.
The decision not to make Katiba Day a public holiday was linked to discussions held during the constitution-making process. Kenyans had expressed concerns about the country having too many public holidays, while the 2010 Constitution sought to consolidate national days.
Katiba Day is also not entirely new in practice. Before its formal designation, civil society organisations, youth groups, legal professionals and political parties had marked the Constitution’s anniversary through discussions, civic education, artistic performances, awards for constitutional defenders and reflections on implementation.
The official observance now provides a national platform for similar activities.
Events include national gatherings, speeches reaffirming commitment to the Constitution, public dialogues and educational programmes in schools and institutions.
The 2026 official observance is being held today at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi and is being attended by President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other national leaders.
Katiba Day is therefore both a commemoration and an opportunity for reflection on the Constitution’s achievements, gaps in implementation and the continued pursuit of its vision.
It joins Madaraka Day, Mashujaa Day and Jamhuri Day on Kenya’s civic calendar, but remains distinct as a working day focused on constitutional awareness, civic engagement and dialogue.
