The senior national team, Black Stars of Ghana, is currently without a substantive head coach after Carlos Queiroz’s short deal expired. The veteran Portuguese trainer signed a four-month deal ahead of the 2026 World Cup in April, replacing Otto Addo, who was sacked in March.
According to our deep-throat source, the GFA will appoint the Belgian-Ghanaian football tactician Desmond Ofei as the new Black Stars head coach ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ofei’s appointment will bring tactical discipline and structure to the senior national team, the GFA believes. Former Black Satellites coach Desmond steps into the new role as the head coach of Black Stars with a proven track record of success at youth level and experience at the highest tier of Ghanaian football. Ofei, who currently serves as the Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, has enjoyed an impressive spell with Ghana’s U20 side and U23 team.
Under his stewardship, the Black Satellites won gold at the 13th African Games in 2023, qualified for the U20 AFCON after placing second at the U20 WAFU B Qualifying Tournament in Togo, competed at the U-20 AFCON in Egypt, and most recently clinched bronze at the WAFU B U20 Boys Championship in Accra.
The 38-year-old UEFA A [Level 4] Licensed Professional football coach is a former U-18 Head coach and U-21 coach at Royal Antwerp FC. He is also a former Lokeren U-21 and Lusitano SAD head coach. He has coaching and scouting experience in Belgium, England, Holland, France, Portugal, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.
The Black Stars are expected to return to competitive action in September when they begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 at the Stade de la Paix de Bouake.
Ghana missed the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco and have been drawn in Group C for the next qualifiers alongside West African rivals Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
