In a testament to compassion and solidarity, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with the National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), delivered critical emergency relief to thousands of families in drought-stricken regions of Northeast Kenya. The joint mission, carried out at the end of May, targeted nomadic pastoralist communities in isolated sub-locations, where the severity of the drought had left households on the brink of acute malnutrition and dehydration.
A Life-Saving Intervention
The relief operation was one of the most extensive of its kind in the region, with 250 tons of food rations distributed across 24 villages, benefiting 3,011 households. Alongside food, clean water supplies were provided to 16 locations, directly supporting 2,142 households. According to the Church’s Africa Newsroom, the intervention was timely, preventing what could have been a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
Denis Mukasa, the humanitarian manager for the Church’s Africa Central Area, emphasized the dual purpose of the relief effort: “Our mission is not just to save lives affected by climate adversity but also to foster unity and love within these communities.” He explained that by providing essential resources, the organizations aimed to empower families to raise their children in a stable and nurturing environment.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
Reaching the affected communities was no small feat. Just days before the relief operation, flash flooding had destroyed a major road, forcing the teams to navigate rough, volcanic terrain and jagged rock formations. The journey was further complicated by the weight of the relief supplies, which caused severe tire damage to the vehicles. Despite these obstacles, the teams made emergency roadside repairs to ensure the mission could proceed without delay.
Upon arrival, the relief supplies were carefully unloaded and organized into separate piles for each household. To ensure fairness and transparency, the women of each family were called by name and directed to their designated supplies. This meticulous process guaranteed that no family was left behind, a detail that resonated deeply with the recipients.
A Moment of Joy and Gratitude
The impact of the relief effort was palpable. Sister Denise Chadwick, a humanitarian missionary in the Africa Central Area, shared her observations: “It was a profound experience to witness the joy on these women’s faces when they heard their names called. They ran to their piles of food with such gratitude—simple essentials like grains, beans, and clean water, which would sustain their families for months.”
Her husband, Elder Alan Chadwick, reflected on the mission’s deeper purpose: “Following the example of Jesus Christ, who dedicated His life to helping others, we strive to extend compassion wherever it is needed. This is not just about providing aid; it’s about restoring hope.”
Strengthening Partnerships for Lasting Impact
The collaboration between the Church and NAMLEF extended beyond the immediate relief efforts. Salim Vayani, the secretary general of NAMLEF, expressed deep appreciation in a letter to Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, the president of the Africa Central Area. He highlighted the solidarity and hands-on support provided by the Church delegation, noting that their presence “underscored the depth of our shared values in serving those in need.”
In recognition of the partnership, NAMLEF invited the Africa Central Area presidency to a gratitude dinner in Nairobi on June 27. The final project report praised the Church’s missionaries and humanitarian teams, stating: “Their active participation and unwavering solidarity along the dusty trails brought immense encouragement to both our field crews and the communities we serve.”

This humanitarian effort underscores the power of interfaith collaboration in addressing global crises.
