The Ghana Digital Centres Limited is counting significant losses after heavy rains on Monday, June 29, submerged the premises, disrupting operations and affecting 23 businesses operating from the technology hub.

Several offices at the facility were flooded, with laptops, furniture, carpets and other essential equipment damaged by the floodwaters.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong, told Channel One News that the incident is one of the worst disasters the facility has experienced since its establishment.

She explained that, management had to temporarily ask most staff to stay home because the premises are currently unsafe for normal operations.

“It’s an unfortunate disaster and since I was appointed to this place, it’s the first time I’m seeing something of this nature,” she said.

According to her, the floods have also affected the centre’s tenants, who are a major source of revenue for the company.

“As we are speaking, we are not the only people who suffered from this flood. Our tenants who also bring us money have suffered,” she noted.

Christine Ansong disclosed that, some laptops were completely submerged and management is working with experts to determine whether they can be recovered.

She added that while some data is backed up on cloud systems, other physical assets have been destroyed.

The Deputy CEO revealed that, the centre relies on internally generated funds, with most revenue coming from renting spaces to technology companies and business process outsourcing firms.

She said the company is preparing an incident report to assess the extent of the damage and submit it to the government.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has already visited the facility to assess the situation.

Adwoa Ansong appealed to government, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts to restore the facility and enable affected businesses to resume operations.
