Akatsi (VR), June 24, GNA – Residents of Akatsi in the Volta Region were on Tuesday evening in a jubilant mood despite Ghana’s goalless draw with England in their Group L encounter at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Shortly after the final whistle, groups of football enthusiasts poured onto some streets within the municipality, singing, drumming, and celebrating what many described as a hard-earned and respectable result against one of the tournament favourites.
Mr Jonathan Dorkenoo, a football enthusiast, commended the Black Stars for their resilience and defensive solidity throughout the match, stating that the team displayed discipline and determination in containing a formidable English side.
He, however, criticised what he described as the referee’s lack of impartiality, noting that some decisions did not favour Ghana during the encounter.
Some residents waved national flags, while others gathered at drinking spots to watch post-match analyses and share their views on the outcome of the game.
Although Ghana failed to secure victory, many residents expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, indicating that the draw had boosted confidence and kept alive the nation’s hopes of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
Others called for sustained support for the Black Stars ahead of their next fixture and urged the players to remain focused while improving their finishing in subsequent matches.
The atmosphere in Akatsi remained vibrant well into the night, with music and discussions centred on Ghana’s prospects in the remainder of the tournament.
In the other Group L fixture, Croatia secured a 1-0 win over Panama.
The results leave Ghana and England tied on four points apiece after two matches, with Croatia on three points, while Panama is yet to earn a point.
The final Group L matches, scheduled for June 27, will see Ghana face Croatia, while England takes on Panama, with qualification to the Round of 32 still at stake.
