EDITORIAL: Kenya must fast-track JKIA expansion

The expansion is not just about concrete and steel; it is about jobs, trade, tourism and Kenya’s economic future /FILE

Kenya has taken a bold and necessary step toward securing its position as East Africa’s premier aviation hub by awarding a Sh 375.4 billion contract to China Communications Construction Company for the expansion and modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The project, anchored in a 20-year master plan
running through 2045, is designed to expand JKIA’s capacity from
about 8.8 million
passengers annually to significantly higher volumes through phased development.
This is not merely an upgrade; it is an imperative.

Kenya urgently requires a world-class airport if
it is to remain competitive in the region and the continent. Our neighbours are
not sleeping. Ethiopia is expanding Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport,
Rwanda is pushing ahead with its ambitious Bugesera Airport project and
Tanzania is investing heavily in its aviation infrastructure. If Kenya
hesitates, we risk losing our status as the preferred gateway to East Africa.

This is why the upgrade must start immediately.
Delays are not an option. Every day lost is a day our competitors gain ground.
While scrutiny of public procurement is essential, we must not allow
bureaucratic bottlenecks or vested interests to derail a project of this
national importance.

The JKIA expansion is not just about concrete
and steel; it is about jobs, trade, tourism and Kenya’s economic future. Let us
get it right, but let us get it done. The clock is ticking, and Kenya must fly.
