Attack on forest officers undermines fight against environmental crimes — A Rocha Ghana

Environmental advocacy organisation A Rocha Ghana has strongly condemned the attack on Forestry Commission personnel and the destruction of state property at Babatokuma in the Kintampo District of the Bono East Region.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 9, endangered lives and undermined efforts to protect Ghana’s forests and natural resources.

It led to the destruction of accommodation facilities used by staff stationed at a timber checkpoint in the area.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 12, A Rocha described the incident as unacceptable and cautioned that such acts threaten both environmental protection efforts and the rule of law.

The organisation noted that the attack forms part of a disturbing trend of violence and intimidation targeting Forestry Commission personnel and other frontline conservation workers across the country.

It further expressed concern that repeated attacks on officers enforcing environmental laws often go unresolved, creating a sense of impunity and exposing personnel to greater risks.

“When attacks against frontline personnel go unpunished or unresolved, they embolden perpetrators, weaken the enforcement of environmental laws, and erode public confidence in the administration of justice,” the statement read in part.

It therefore called on the Ghana Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and impartial investigation and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.

A Rocha further called for enhanced security for Forestry Commission personnel, greater transparency in the handling of such cases and stronger collaboration among state institutions involved in environmental law enforcement.

The organisation urged government, traditional authorities, civil society groups and local communities to work together through lawful and peaceful means to protect the country’s natural resources.
