Broadcast journalist with Channel One TV and Citi FM, Godfred Akoto Boafo, has expressed doubts about Cristiano Ronaldo’s ability to make a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to him, the Portuguese captain may struggle to cope with the demands of the tournament despite his impressive performances in Saudi Arabia and his status as one of football’s greatest players.
Speaking with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, June 10, Akoto Boafo argued that Ronaldo, who will be 41 years old during the tournament, could find it difficult to keep up with the pace and intensity of the World Cup.
“Despite doing well in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Ronaldo will struggle to make an impact with the fast pace of the 2026 World Cup. As legendary as he is, this World Cup will be too much for Cristiano Ronaldo to make an impact,” Akoto Boafo said.
He, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as a dismissal of Ronaldo’s achievements.
“People should not take my words out of context,” he added.
Akoto Boafo also questioned Portugal’s chances of progressing deep into the competition under head coach Roberto Martínez.
“I don’t think Portugal will go far because Roberto Martínez hasn’t cracked the international cake yet,” he said.
Akoto Boafo suggested that Portugal’s challenges extend beyond their attack, arguing that the team lacks balance and remains vulnerable defensively.
“I don’t know where the goals are going to come from. Everybody looks at the central midfield, but I think they are weak at the back,” he stated.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is expected to be Ronaldo’s sixth appearance at the tournament.
