Nigerian troops have rescued two kidnap victims in Kwara State, the military said on Saturday, as security forces intensify operations against criminal groups across the country’s North Central region.

The Nigerian Army said the victims were rescued during a clearance operation conducted by troops of the Joint Task Force North Central, operating under Operation Savannah Shield.

According to a statement posted on the army’s official social media account, the operation took place on June 3 along the Gidan Dogo Ekaa axis, where soldiers on a fighting patrol encountered two men who had escaped from their abductors.

The military identified the victims as Temitope Samuel, 42, and Mohammed Sani, 40.

“In a decisive demonstration of operational prowess, troops of the Joint Task Force North Central Operation Savannah Shield successfully rescued two civilians from the clutches of kidnappers in Kwara State,” the statement said.

The army said the victims were immediately taken into protective custody and transported to Patrol Base Babanla, where they are receiving medical treatment, psychological support and other assistance following their ordeal.

Military authorities said arrangements were being made to reunite the rescued men with their families.

Kidnapping for ransom remains a major security challenge in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North Central and northwestern regions, where armed groups frequently target travellers, villagers, students and other civilians.

The latest rescue comes amid ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring security in affected communities.

The army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through intelligence-led operations under Operation Savannah Shield, a security initiative focused on tackling criminal activities in the North Central zone.

It also urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts against kidnappers and other criminal elements.

Authorities did not disclose details about the kidnappers involved in the incident or whether any arrests were made during the operation.
