2026 FIFA World Cup: Work more on defense before anything – Asamoah Gyan to Ghana coach

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has cautioned Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz over his tactics for the Mundial, with few days to kickoff in USA, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana’s last appearance at the FIFA World Cup was a disaster, finishing bottom of the group which had Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

Gyan who played as a striker and holds the record of Ghana’s all-time topscorer wants the Black Stars technical team to setup the team in a defensive style before thinking of an attacking system, with strong believe that not to concede before scoring should be paramount.

According to the former Sunderland forward, Carlos Queiroz should fix Ghana’s defensive worries before tackling upfront since that would hand an advantage to sealing qualification through the global showpiece.

“We have a coach whose time is limited. We have to give him the hope and support to qualify. We should be more defensively sound not to concede before we can think about other things”

The Black Stars in their last three international friendly matches conceded in each, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria hence Asamoah Gyan asking Carlos Queiroz to prioritize defense over attack.

“We should be more defensively sound in our game before we think about other things. If we don’t fix our defence, opponents can penetrate easily because it looks like now we are conceding in every game”

“If we are able to be more defensively sound, like what the Moroccans did in Qatar and what we did in 2010, I think it is something that will help. I’m not the coach, but that’s my advice.”

Ghana is heading to their fifth FIFA World Cup tournament and expected to excel with Carlos Queiroz and his constituted technical team at the 23rd FIFA World Cup edition.

The Black Stars is housed in Group L and will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
