How Ghana Card helped arrest criminals and trace identity of murdered victim — Ex-Regional Minister recounts

Former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has recounted how the Ghana Card played a crucial role in solving a murder case and identifying a victim who had been killed under disturbing circumstances.

The former minister said the case involved a young woman who was lured from the Ashanti Region and murdered, with her body discovered in a remote area.

According to him, initial efforts to identify the victim proved difficult due to the condition of the crime scene.

He explained that a breakthrough came after investigators found a blood-stained cloth near the scene, in which a Ghana Card was found.

He further detailed how the identity document became central to the investigation and eventual arrest of the suspects.

“We got something from the cloth search. And it was the most important piece to help find who the headless body was and who the killers were too. It was her GHANA CARD,” he stated.

According to him, the identity card helped investigators establish the victim’s identity, trace her movements, and ultimately track down the suspects who were later arrested and put before court.

He added that the incident demonstrated the importance of national identification systems in criminal investigations and justice delivery.

His comments follow recent remarks by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, who described the Ghana Card as a key tool in national security and economic systems.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister’s comment comes after the card’s influence was earlier dismissed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition.

At the time, former Vice President and 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had asserted that he would choose the Ghana Card over interchanges, while highlighting the benefits of the national identity system.
