National Tenants Union of Ghana backs move to halt proposed hostel fee hikes

The National Tenants Union of Ghana (NATUG) has welcomed a directive by the Rent Control Department to temporarily suspend proposed increases in private student hostel fees for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The directive also calls for stakeholder consultations on pricing regulation, following growing public concern over rising accommodation costs in tertiary institutions across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 19, NATUG described the move as a timely intervention that reflects sensitivity to student welfare and affordability challenges.

The union said the decision provides an opportunity for broader engagement on sustainable pricing structures within the student accommodation sector.

“NATUG welcomes the directive by the Rent Control Department to suspend hostel fee adjustments and initiate stakeholder engagements,” the statement read in part.

It added that the intervention demonstrates responsiveness to concerns raised by students and the wider public.

“This demonstrates responsiveness to student concerns,” the union noted.

NATUG further stated that its interest is not to undermine private investment in hostel facilities, but to promote fairness and transparency in pricing.

The union said it remains committed to working with stakeholders to develop practical and evidence-based policy solutions to address accommodation challenges facing students nationwide.
