2026 WC: Carlos Queiroz needs support, not criticism – Sammy Kuffour

Former Black Stars Management member has asked Ghanaians to support newly appointed Black Stars coach as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association last week, confirmed the appointment of Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo. He agreed on a short term contract to lead Ghana to the global showpiece which starts in the summer.

Following his appointment, several stakeholders have criticised GFA’s choice with some insisting Carlos is not the man fit for the job. Specifically, questioning his traditionally conservative style of play – Defensive.

However, ex-Ghana international Sammy Osei Kuffuor has called on fans to throw their full support behind Carlos Queiroz, insisting unity will be key to the team’s progress ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“For me, [Ghana’s struggles] is not about the coach,” the former Bayern Munich defender said. “Have we been offensive in recent years? Playing Comoros, we were playing three back. Are we not defensive?”, he quizzed when asked by 3Sports.

“Whether we like it or not, we’ve already signed him, so we should give him the necessary support. Critics here and there will not help.”

Kuffuor also highlighted the importance of unity among supporters and stakeholders, warning that constant scrutiny could destabilise the team at a crucial period.

“We can criticise whatever [but] he is going to sit on the bench. My advice to every Ghanaian is to support him.”

The former defender also emphasised the need for a strong technical setup around Queiroz, advising the coach to work closely with individuals who understand the local football landscape.

“I’ll also advise that he gets people who understand Ghana football, who have played there and tasted it.”

The 73-year old gaffer is expected to begin his tenure immediately, with upcoming friendlies against Wales and Mexico in May, before attention turns to the World Cup in June. Ghana face a daunting group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama.
