Nigerian Government Defends Jilli Airstrike as Precision Operation

The Nigerian Government has defended the April 11 airstrike carried out by the Air Force in the Jilli axis of Gubio Local Government Area, Borno State, describing it as a “precision, intelligence-led operation” targeting a terrorist stronghold.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the operation was conducted under Operation HADIN KAI and was aimed at disrupting insurgent activities in one of the North-East’s most volatile corridors.

Idris said; “This was a deliberate, intelligence-led operation, not an indiscriminate attack. The Jilli axis has long been designated a high-risk zone with clear security advisories restricting civilian presence.”

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to national security, the Minister expressed regret over reported civilian casualties.

He said; “Every Nigerian life is sacred, and any loss of civilian life is deeply regretted. I extend condolences to affected families and sympathise with the injured.”

According to him, the strike followed weeks of surveillance and credible intelligence indicating that the area, locally referred to as Kasu Daulaye or “terrorists’ market”, served as a hub for Boko Haram and ISWAP operations.

The Minister cited further evidence gathered on April 12, when troops arrested a 15-year-old ISWAP courier, identified as Tijjani, in Ngamdu.

“The suspect admitted transporting funds and logistics between Jilli and other locations, underscoring the extent of terrorist activity and the exploitation of civilians, including minors,” he said.

The Minister said that a full and independent investigation has been ordered to assess the circumstances surrounding the strike.

“This review will examine intelligence, targeting, and execution. We will address any gaps and ensure accountability where necessary,” Idris said.

He added that humanitarian assistance is already being coordinated in partnership with the Borno and Yobe State Governments, as well as emergency agencies, urging civilians to comply strictly with security advisories in conflict zones.

Idris further urged the media to prioritise responsible journalism in reporting security matters.

Highlighting broader counter-terrorism efforts, the Minister said that “386 convictions had been secured out of 508 terrorism-related cases in recent trials at the Federal High Court in Abuja.”

He reiterated the Nigerian Government’s determination to defeat terrorism and maintain national security, with a commitment to greater precision, accountability, and sustained action to achieve lasting peace.
